League play opens this week for GLIAC Basketball teams

GLIAC -- This week marks the start of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play for both the league’s men’s and women’s basketball programs.

On Thursday (Dec. 1), conference action will open with four matchups on the schedule — Grand Valley State at Ferris State, Davenport at Lake Superior State, Northern Michigan at Purdue Nprthwest and Michigan Tech at Parkside.

Saginaw Valley State and Wayne State are idol Thursday and will square off on Saturday in their conference openers.

The Grand Valley State women's team, the GLIAC preseason favorite, is ranked No. 1 in the nation entering conference play while Ferris State is ranked 20th. No GLIAC men's team is nationally ranked but Wayne State is receiving votes.

On the men's side, following their nonconference slates, Northern Michigan and Purdue Northwest are positioned in first place with 5-2 records. The Wildcats are led by the GLIAC Preseason Player of the Year, senior guard Max Bjorklund, who leads the league in scoring (25.1 ppg). Ferris State, the 2022-23 GLIAC preseason favorite, and Parkside each boast 4-2 marks.

Atop the women's standings is 5-0 Grand Valley State and 5-0 Ferris State. The Bulldogs rank No. 3 in the NCAA in scoring offense, averaging 86.2 points per game. Michigan Tech (6-1) and Wayne State (5-1) each possess one-loss records.

In addition to SVSU-WSU, Saturday’s matchups include Grand Valley State at Lake Superior State, Michigan Tech at Purdue Northwest and Northern Michigan at Parkside.
