WSU's Cuzzort Chosen AS GLIAC Men's Golf "Athlete of the Week"

Bay City, Mich. -- Wayne State University senior Steve Cuzzort has been chosen as the GLIAC Men's Golf "Athlete of the Week" it was announced by the league office.

Wayne State University senior Steve Cuzzort became the third GLIAC medalist in school history after his performance at the 2008 GLIAC Men's Golf Championships, held at the Bay City Country Club in Bay City, Mich. Steve carded an eight-under par 208 (67-70-71), which broke the 54-hole record of 213 set by Joe Spatafore in 1983 and teammate Joe Joszczyk last season. Cuzzort is leading his team with a stroke average of 70.93 in 14 rounds played.

 Ashland - The Eagles were sixth at this year's GLIAC Championships. Sophomore Michael Bowser (Dublin, OH/Coffman) finished in a tie for 16th (221/+5) to pace the Eagles. Freshman Jay Overy (Grafton, OH) finished in a tie for sixth (222/+6).

 Ferris State - The Bulldogs placed fifth at the 2008 GLIAC Men's Golf Championships (Oct.5-6) with a three-round, seven-over par 871-stroke total on the par 72, 6860-yard Bay City (Mich.) Country Club. Ferris State, which produced rounds of 289, 293, and 289, finished one stroke behind Saginaw Valley State (870) for fourth place. Junior Kurt Valley (Bay City/Western) led the way with a 213 score (70-71-72=213, -3) to tie for fourth place. Junior Eric Lilleboe (Okemos/Lansing Catholic Central) carded a 215 (69-73-75=215, -1) to claim a share of sixth place, while senior Kelbi Lee (Billings, Mont.) also cracked the top 20 by tying for 16th place as a result of shooting a 221-stroke total (77-71-73=221, +5).

Findlay - The Oilers finished second at the GLIAC Championships, finishing one stroke behind Grand Valley State...Findlay won the championship last year at the Findlay Country Club...As a team, the Oilers shot a 293 in the opening round and then tied a school record with a 285 in the second before closing the tournament with a 286...For the event, Findlay shot an even par 864 which established a new school record for a 54-hole tournament...The previous record was set at the Northern Michigan University Invitational, held on Sept. 7, 2008...Individually, sophomore Kyle Nickson led the way by tying for fourth place with a three-under par score of 213...The score was the second lowest ever for a 54-hole tournament in the history of Findlay golf....Nickson started off the tournament with an even par 72 in the first round and then shot a three under 69 in the second before finishing with another 72 in the third...Sophomore Joe McGeean also played well for Findlay, finishing tied for tenth after recording a 217, the third lowest 54-hole score in the history of the program.

Grand Valley State - Grand Valley State claimed the 2008 GLIAC Men's Golf Championship with a GLIAC Championship scoring record of 863 (-1). The title was the Lakers' second in the last three years and the third in the program's history...Senior Tyler Hering (Muskegon, Mich.) shot a one-under par 215 and finished tied for sixth overall. Hering followed a three-under par 69 on the second 18 with a two-under par 70 on the final 18. Senior Matt Johnson (Haslett, Mich.) finished with an even-par 216 (T-8th), which included a three-under par second round (69) and an even par (72) final round. Freshman Ben Brooks (Cedar Spring, Mich.) shot a clutch three-under par 69 on the final 18 for a 54-hole total of 217 (T-10th). Junior Josh Burt (Holt, Mich.) finished tied for 12th with a 220, while Matt Malloure finished tied for 16th with a 221.

Northern Michigan - The Wildcats finished ninth in the 2008 GLIAC Championships, shooting a total of 954 (313-320-321). Neil Passinault led the team with a 12-over par finish in the 54-hole event.

Northwood - The Northwood University Men's Golf team placed seventh at the GLIAC Championships Monday afternoon (October 6). The two-day, 54-hole event was hosted by Saginaw Valley State and held at the Bay City Country Club. The course played as a 6,806 yard par 72. Northwood shot team scores of 290-298-303 to finish at 891. Grand Valley State was the overall winner at 863, followed by Findlay at 864. Freshman Nick Prokop (Novi, Mich.) led the way for the Timberwolves. He shot scores of 70-72-74 to finish in a tie for eighth. Luigi Spadafora (Milford, Mich.) finished 28th overall at 225 (77-73-75).

Saginaw Valley State - The SVSU men's golf team held a one shot edge going into the final round of the 2008 Men's GLIAC Tournament, but cooled off during round three, as they shot a third round total of six over par to finish the tournament with a combined score of 870, six back of winning school Grand Valley State...The Cardinals were led by Kasey Hocquard (Cheboygan, Mich.), who shot a four-under 68 after shooting an even-par 144 for day one. Dieter Schulz (Port Huron, Mich.) fired an even par 144 for day one, but struggled to find his swing in the final round with a 78. Nate Kelly (Suttons Bay, Mich.) shot a four-over 148 on day one and shot an even-par 72 in the final round. Teammate Mike Horn (Clarkston, Mich.) entered the clubhouse after the first day with a one-under 143 for the first two rounds, but couldn't find a groove on day two as he carded a final round 77. Brian King (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) entered the club house with a 77 in the final round. He shot a 149 on day one.

Tiffin - Tiffin University was 8th of 9 teams at the GLIAC Championships held at the Bay City Country Club in Bay City, Mich. The Dragons finished with a 918, ahead of 9th place Northern Michigan. Bleu George led the team, tying for 12th place with a 76-73-71-220, 10 strokes better than his nearest teammate. Jon Kemman was next in 35th place with a 230, while Justin Sparks and Andy Kronander tied with scores of 237. Jesse Moss rounded out the field for TU, finishing with a 238. The Dragons have one fall match left at the Lincoln Memorial in Tennessee on Oct. 20-21.

Wayne State - Wayne State finished in third place at the 2008 GLIAC Championships...Steve Cuzzort (Grosse Ile, Mich.) became the third GLIAC medalist in school history and the first since Ryan Johnson in 2004 (head coach Mike Horn was the first in 1985)...he carded an eight-under par 208 (67-70-71), breaking the 54-hole school record of 213 set by Joe Spatafore in 1983 and Joe Juszczyk (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Divine Child) last season...Juszczyk also came in under his old 54-hole mark, tying for second with a four-under 212 (71-74-67)...Cuzzort and Juszczyk's respective rounds of 67 also matched the 18-hole school record...as a team, Wayne State finished in the top three for the third time since 1989 and the first since WSU won the league title in 2003...the Warriors, who led the field with a first-round score of 284, shot 292 in the second round and 290 in the third for a total of 866, one stroke over par...David Anderson (Sarnia, Ont./St. Clair Secondary) tied for 20th (75-72-75-222), Michael Wouters (Sterling Hts., Mich./Henry Ford II) placed in a tie for 25th (71-76-76-223), and Chad Johnson (Plymouth, Mich./Canton) finished 37th (75-78-81-234)... Wayne State is off from competition until the Ashland Invitational on March 28-29.
