BAY CITY, Mich. — Ferris State University senior Eric Lilleboe (Okemos, Mich./Lansing Catholic Central) has been named the 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men’s golf “Athlete of the Year.” He claimed the award by posting the lowest stroke average in a minimum of 15 rounds of competition during the fall and spring seasons. Grand Valley State University rookie Chase Olsen (White Pigeon, Mich.) took “Freshman of the Year” accolades by recording the lowest stroke average among GLIAC freshmen. Wayne State University’s Mike Horn earned “Coach of the Year” honors in balloting conducted by the league’s men’s golf head coaches.

Lilleboe was this season’s GLIAC Championship medalist, recording a three-round four-under par 209 score (70-70-69=209).  He is currently averaging a team-best and career single-season best 72.34 strokes average (2,098 total strokes) in 29 rounds this season. Lilleboe has registered 10 top-10 finishes during the 2009-10 season, which includes seven finishes among the top five.  The Okemos, Michigan native was the individual medalist at three tournaments this season - Saginaw Valley State University Al Watrous Memorial Intercollegiate (9/12-13), Ferris State Matt Pinter Invitational (9/26-27), and GLIAC Championships (10/3-5).  Lilleboe, the 2007-08 GLIAC men’s golf “Athlete of the Year,” is a three-time All-GLIAC first-team selection (2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10).

Olsen was named GLIAC “Freshman of the Year” after finishing sixth at the 2009 GLIAC Championship.   A native from White Pigeon, Mich., Olsen shot a 72-77-70 for a total of 219 (+6), helping the Lakers clinch back-to-back GLIAC titles. At the Great Lakes Region Invitational #3, Olsen recorded the third lowest round of the tournament and also the lowest score on the second day. He shot an 81 on the opening round, then fired a blistering 69 on the second day, finishing at 150 (+6).

Horn, a three-time GLIAC “Coach of the Year” selection, guided the Warriors to their second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship, the team’s only two appearances in program history.  Wayne State qualified by way of its second-place finish at the D-II Super Regional.  This year marked Wayne State’s fourth consecutive team appearance in the Super Regional and its sixth in the last seven years under Horn’s watch.  After finishing third at the GLIAC Championship last October, the Warriors enjoyed a successful spring season, winning the Wisconsin-Parkside Invitational in March and the Great Lakes Regional at the Purgatory Golf Course (Noblesville, Ind.) last month.

Joining Lilleboe on the 2010 All-GLIAC men’s golf first team are: Ferris State University senior Kurt Valley (Bay City, Mich./Western) and junior Garrett Simons (Grand Ledge, Mich./Grand Ledge); Wayne State senior Joe Juszczyk (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Divine Child); Grand Valley State senior Matt Malloure (Grand Ledge, Mich.); and University of Findlay sophomore Michael Schmitmeyer (St. Mary’s, Ohio).
