BAY CITY, Mich. - Wayne State University sophomore Josh Mitroka (Riverview, Mich.) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's golf "Athlete of the Week" after claiming medalist honors at the the Al Watrous Memorial Tournament in a playoff over the weekend.

Wayne State sophomore Josh Mitroka
earned medalist honors at the SVSU Al Watrous Memorial, as the
Warriors finished in a tie for fourth overall
(287-293—580). Mitroka, who was tied for the lead after
shooting 69 in Saturday’s first round, carded a 70 in the
second round Sunday for a 139, matching the two-day score of
Findlay’s Michael Schmitmeyer. The two battled through four
playoff holes before a birdie by Mitroka broke the tie.
Ashland - The AU men’s golf team opened its season this past weekend (Sept. 10-11) with a victory at Saginaw Valley State’s Al Watrous Memorial Invitational... The Eagles led a 13-team field with a team score of 566 (-10). Grand Valley State shot 577 (+1) to finish second and Findlay carded a score of 578 (+2) to place third. Wayne State and Northwood tied for fourth. Both schools shot 580 (+4)... Ashland’s top score was turned in by senior Jay Overy (Grafton, Ohio/Midview). He finished third (140). Wayne State’s Josh Mitroka was the medalist. He won the title in a playoff with Findlay’s Michael Schmitmeyer. Both players shot 139... AU’s Brendan Jenkins (Munroe Falls, Ohio/Stow) finished in a tie for fourth place (141). Senior Steve Bednar (Dublin, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) finished in eighth place (142) and junior Mark Scott Jr. (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) ended the tourney in a four-way tie for ninth (143).
Ferris State - FSU wrapped up its first action of
the season by placing sixth overall in the Al Watrous Memorial
Invitational hosted by Saginaw Valley State on Sunday (Sept. 11) in
Bay City, Mich... The Bulldogs carded a two-round total of 583 to
finish 17 strokes behind champion Ashland, which totaled a 566 over
the two rounds at the Bay City Country Club. FSU shot a 290
in Saturday’s (Sept. 10) opening round before coming in at
293 on Sunday...Bulldog senior Garrett Simons tied for fourth
overall in the field with a score of 141 over the two rounds of
action to finish at three-under for the tournament. He was in
a four-way tie for fourth and only two strokes behind champion Josh
Mitroka of Wayne State (-5), who won a playoff against
Findlay’s Michael Schmitmeyer for medalist honors... Simons
shot rounds of 69 and 72 overall in the two days of competition...
Ferris State’s Sam Stark placed tied for 19th overall as did
Trent Davison with both shooting a 146 (+2)... FSU’s Tyler
Robinson came in tied for 38th (150, +6) with Richard Weisenberger
placing tied for 48th overall (153, +9)... A total of 65 golfers
took part in the event on the par 72 course measuring 6,880
yards... The Bulldogs will next take part in the Northwood
Invitational, Sept. 17-18, in Midland, Mich.
Findlay - The University of Findlay men's golf
team placed third at the Al Watrous Memorial Invitational, which
concluded on Sunday, September 11 at the Bay Valley Country Club in
Saginaw, Michigan. The Oilers ended the tournament with a 2-over
par score of 578 (292, 286)... The Oilers two-round score was the
third best in school history while their 286 during the final round
was the fourth best mark in UF history... Individually, Michael
Schmitmeyer finished second with a 5-under par score of 139, the
third best mark in school history... Schmitmeyer shot a 72 in the
opening round and then came back with a 5-under par score of 67 in
the second round, which is the second best round in school
history... Logan Cooke (73, 71 - 144) finished tied for 13th while
Marcus Hunt (73, 74 - 147) tied for 25th... Jake North (77, 74 -
151) and Jack Kastor (74, 79 - 153) also competed for Findlay at
the event... The Oilers will be in action again on Sept. 17 at the
Northwood Invitational in Midland, Mich.
Grand Valley State - The Grand Valley State
men’s golf team placed second in their first tournament of
the season at the Al Watrous Memorial Invite over the weekend,
shooting a one-over 577...The Lakers were led by sophomore Jack
Rider (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett Catholic Central) who finished in a
tie for fourth after shooting a three-under 141 in the
tournament...Seniors Nick Gunthorpe (Lansing, Mich./Ovid-Elsie) and
Travis Shooks (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids C.C.) both shot a
one-under 143 in the tournament to tie for ninth place...Shooks led
all Lakers with the low round of the weekend, shooting a two-under
70 in the final round to help push GVSU from fourth to second in
the final standings ...GVSU will travel to Midland, Mich. to
participate in the Northwood University Invite this weekend.
Lake Erie Storm - Despite a four stroke improvement in the second round, the Lake Erie College men's golf team was unable to make up any ground in the team standings and finished in 12th place at the season-opening Al Watrous Memorial in Bay City, Mich. on Sunday (Sept. 11)... The Storm posted a team score of 304 on day two to finish at 612, 11 shots behind host Saginaw Valley State University. Ashland University won the team title with a score of 566, 11 strokes better than runner up Grand Valley State University... Individually, junior Mike Guarino (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) was Lake Erie's top finisher, tying for 30th place. He shot a 73-75-148 (+4). Senior Frank Whites III (Wickliffe, Ohio/Wickliffe) was next, tied for 48th, at 75-78-153 (+9), followed closely by classmate Matt Hennessey (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) at 79-75-154 (+10)... The Storm is at the Northwood University Invitational in Midland, Mich. next weekend, Sept. 17-18.
Lake Superior State - Lake Superior State opened the 2011-12 season with a ninth-place finish at the 13-team Al Watrous Memorial hosted by Saginaw Valley State. Freshman Doug Piesko (Washington, Mich.) fired a 72-74—146 to finish +2, tie for 19th and lead the Lakers. Junior Mike Caputo (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) tied for 25th with a 70-77—147.
Northern Michigan - The NMU golf team finished
13th in its season-opening meet at the Al Watrous Memorial Invite
at Bay City Country Club on Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 10-11)...
The Wildcats finished with a team score of 626 (312 on Saturday and
314 on Sunday). Ashland won the meet with a score of 566... Mike
Murphy was the lone Wildcat in the top 20 as he led NMU with a 146,
finished tied for 19th. He shot a two-over 74 on Saturday and
was even on Sunday with a 72 ... Jared Reid was three-over on the
weekend with a 147. He shot a two-under on Saturday (70) and
five-over on Sunday (77)... Other Wildcats competing were Colten
Thewis (162), Adam Huss (171) and Zack Ginop (176)... The Wildcats
hit the links next weekend at the Northwood University Invitational
held at Currie Golf Course in Midland, Mich.
Northwood - The Northwood University men’s
golf team opened its 2011-12 season by tying for fourth place at
the Al Watrous Memorial Invite Saturday and Sunday (September
10-11)... The two-day, 36-hole event was held at the Bay City
Country Club. The course played as a 6,880 yard, par 72...
Northwood finished the event with a four-over par total of 580,
carding rounds of 287 and 293 to tie for fourth overall.
Ashland was the overall winner at 566 (286-280), followed by Grand
Valley State (577) and Findlay (578)... Grant Peffer (Mt. Pleasant,
Mich.) led the way for the T-wolves. He shot rounds of 72 and
71 to finish at one-under par, good for a tie for ninth
overall. Gilles Medale (Valence D’Agen, France) made a
strong debut for Northwood, tying for 16th overall at 145
(71-74)... NU will host the Northwood Invitational Saturday and
Sunday (September 17-18).
Ohio Dominican Panthers - ODU’s men’s golf team shot an eight-over 296 in the final round on Sunday to secure a tenth place finish in its season opener at the Al Watrous Memorial, hosted by Saginaw Valley State (Mich.) at Bay City Country Club. The Panthers, with a two-day team total of 600 (304-296), edged out host SVSU by one stroke for tenth and were just three shots shy of Lake Superior State (Mich.) for ninth. Junior Tyler Sebert (Grove City, OH) led ODU with a two-day total of 147 (73-74) to finish in a five-way tie for 25th at three-over par. Classmate Kevin Hartoin (Cincinnati, OH) finished in a tie for 34th, just two shots back after shooting 78 in round one and a team tournament low round of 71 on day two. ODU is back on course this Thursday, Sept. 15 as it hosts the 36-hole ODU Kisor Classic at Cumberland Trail in Pataskala, Ohio.
Saginaw Valley State - The SVSU men’s golf team finished seventh as host of the Al Watrous Memorial Invitational. The Cardinals fired an even-par 288 in the final round, including under-par rounds from junior Dustin Vogl (Bay City, Mich./Western HS) and red shirt freshman Micah Skidmore. Skidmore led Saginaw Valley with rounds of 73-71 to finish at even par in his first collegiate tournament. Sophomore Adam Hansen (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western HS) was one shot back (+1) posting a 145 to finish t-16. Vogl used a two-under par 70 on Sunday to jump into a tie for 19th. The Cardinal golfers will compete in next weekend’s Northwood University Invitational at Currie Golf Course in Midland.
Tiffin - Tiffin University’s men’s
golf team played at the Al Watrous Memorial Invitational hosted by
Saginaw Valley State University, finishing 8th of 13 teams with a
296-289-585. Ashland won the overall event with a two-round total
of 566... Tiffin had a strong second round, finishing fifth with a
289 and just three strokes out of second place... Dillon Klein led
the way with a fourth place finish, firing 71-70-141, while Jason
Crow was 13th with 73-71-144... Tyler Maranville shot 148 (30th
place), while Blake DeBruyn (152, 45th) and Justin Epure (157,
56th) rounding out the field... TU now travels to the Northwood
Invite on Sept. 17 and 18.

Redshirt freshman Rob Favaro finished in a tie for 19th place (74-72—146), and senior Jack Mitroka was a stroke back in a tie for 25th (72-75—147). Among those tied for 34th place with a score of 149 were senior Eric Johnson and redshirt freshman Reid Dean.
