BAY CITY, Mich. - Grand Valley State University sophomore Chris Cunningham (Milford, Mich.) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's golf "Athlete of the Week" after claiming medalist honors at the 2011 GLIAC Men's Golf Championship held at Eagle Eye Golf Course in Bath, Michigan.

GLIAC Championship, shooting rounds of 73-71-73 for a one-over-par
217 total. Cunningham became the first GVSU golfer since Matt
Malloure in 2007 to claim medalist honors at the GLIAC
Championship. His efforts helped the Lakers take the team title as
well, as GVSU compiled rounds of 290, 295 and 302 (887, +23), 16
strokes clear of second place.

Ashland - The Ashland University men’s golf team finished in sixth place at the 2011 GLIAC Championships, which concluded on Monday (Oct. 3) at the Eagle Eye Golf Course in Bath, Mich... Grand Valley State shot 887 (+23) to lead a field of 12 teams. Tiffin (903/+39) was second and Wayne State (914/+50) was third... The Eagles shot 921 (+57)... AU senior Jay Overy (Grafton, Ohio/Midview) shot 221 (+5) to finish in fourth place. Grand Valley State’s Chris Cunningham (217/+1) was the medalist and his teammate, Nick Gunthorpe (219/+3), was second. Northwood’s Matt Ostby (220/+4) was third... Junior Mark Scott Jr. (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) finished in a tie for 21st. Scott shot 232 (+16). Senior Steven Bednar (Munroe Falls, Ohio/Stow) finished in a tie for 24th. Bednar shot 233 (+17). Junior Brendan Jenkins (Dublin, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) shot 235 (+19) and ended the two-day event tied for 31st.
Ferris State - The Ferris State University men’s golf team placed fifth overall in the 2011 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships, which wrapped up on Monday (Oct. 3) at Eagle Eye Golf Course in Bath, Mich... The Bulldogs shot rounds of 313, 306 and 297 to finish at 916 (+52), respectively, for the 54-hole event. FSU entered Monday’s second day of action in seventh place, but moved up two spots following the completion of the second round in addition to the third and final 18 holes... Sophomore Trent Davison placed tied for fifth overall in leading the Bulldogs as he fired a six-over par score of 222 in the two days of action. Davison shot a 73 in the opening round followed by scores of 77 and 72 for FSU... FSU junior Tyler Robinson came in tied for 10th in the field at 226 (+10) with rounds of 77, 75 and 74. He was followed by senior Garrett Simons, who posted a 233 (+17) to tie for 24th place on rounds of 84, 73 and 76.
Findlay - The UF men's golf team placed seventh at the 2011 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship, which took place at the Eagle Eye Golf Club in Lansing, Michigan. The Oilers shot a three round score of 927 (312, 306, 309) at the event as Grand Valley State University took home the title after carding an 887 (290, 295, 302)... Michael Schmitmeyer led the way as he tied for eighth with a 225 (78, 74, 73)... Marcus Hunt (76, 80, 77 - 233) and Logan Cooke (80, 72, 81 - 233) tied for 24th at the event... Jake North was tied for 41st with a 240 (78, 80, 82) while Jack Kastor finished 51st with a 247 (87, 82, 78)... The Oilers will be back in action again on October 8-9 when they host the Findlay Invitational at Red Hawk Run Golf Course.
Grand Valley State - The men’s golf team won their fifth GLIAC Championship in program history at Eagle Eye Golf Course in Bath, Mich. over the weekend, carding a 54-hole team total of 887 to win by 16 strokes. Sophomore Chris Cunningham claimed medalist honors in the event, shooting rounds of 73-71-73 for a one-over 217. Cunningham became the first GVSU golfer since Matt Malloure in 2007 to claim medalist honors at the GLIAC Championship. Finishing just behind him in the individual standings was senior Nick Gunthorpe who shot a three-over 219 (73-72-74) to give the Lakers the top two spots in the final individual standings. The team will be back in action this weekend when they take part in the Outback Steakhouse Invitational at Red Hawk Run Golf Course in Findlay, Ohio on October 8th-9th.
Lake Erie Storm - After a strong first round, the Storm slid to an 11th place finish in the final two rounds at the GLIAC Championships – a one spot improvement from their conference debut last year. Senior Mike Guarino shot a final round 76 to finish at 213 (+15) and tied for 19th place individually. He was LEC’s low scorer for the event. The Storm’s lowest individual round was a 72 by senior Matt Hennessey in the first round. Lake Erie is at Findlay this weekend for the Bing Beall Classic.
Lake Superior State - Freshman Doug Piesko (Washington, Mich.) tied for 21st to lead LSSU, which tied for ninth place at the GLIAC Championships. Piesko, who has a scoring average of 76.0, shot a 75-79-78—232. Sophomore Justin Helmholdt (Hastings, Mich.) improved upon his scoring average of 79.3 and placed 30th with a 77-80-77—234. The Lakers compete Oct. 8-9 at Findlay.
Northern Michigan - The Northern Michigan University golf team finished the fall portion of its schedule at the 2011 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship at Eagle Eye Golf Course. The Wildcats finished 12th during the three round tournament. Grand Valley State took home the conference championship... Jared Reid was the top golfer for the ‘Cats. He finished tied for 19th with a weekend total of 231. Reid’s best round was a 1-under 71, during the second round... Mike Murphy was six shots back of Reid. He shot a 76 in the second round for his best score... Colten Thewis (242), Zach Ginop (259) and Adam Huss (264) rounded out the scoring for Northern... The Wildcats are off until March 30, 2012 when they travel to Kentucky.
Northwood - The Northwood University men’s golf team finished fourth at the GLIAC Championships Monday afternoon (Oct. 3)... The two-day, 54-hole event was held at the Eagle Eye Golf Club. The course played as a 6,899 yard, par 72... Northwood shot team scores of 307-299-309 for a 915 total. Grand Valley State was the overall winner at 887 (290-295-302), while Tiffin was second at 903 (308-294-301). NU was just one stroke behind third-place Wayne State (296-304-314)... The fourth-place finish for the Timberwolves was the highest for Northwood since 2002, when NU was the overall winner of the event... The Timberwolves were led by senior Matt Ostby (Mt. Morris, Mich.). He shot rounds of 71-74-75 for a four-over par total of 220, good for third place out of 60 players. Blair Turner (Midland, Mich.) finished at 228 (79-71-78) to tie for 14th.
Ohio Dominican Panthers - ODU battled to a final score of 949 (314-314-321), edging out Lake Erie by three strokes for 10th and finishing just three shots shy of Lake Superior State (Mich.) in ninth place at the GLIAC Championships at Eagle Eye Golf Club in Bath, Michigan. With a team tournament low round of 70 (-2) in the final round, junior Kevin Hartoin (Cincinnati, OH) jumped from a tie for 27th to finish in a four-way tie for 10th at 10-over par 226 (80-76-70). After leading the Panthers the past three events and in Sunday’s opening round, junior Connor Stookey (Milford, OH) secured a tie for 34th with a score of 237 (72-79-86). Senior Gary Wright Jr. (Warsaw, OH) came home with a 245 (79-79-87) to tie for 48th and freshman Eric Brown (Batavia, OH) finished one shot back with a 246 (85-81-80).
Saginaw Valley State - The Saginaw Valley State University golf team finished in eighth place at the 2011 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championships at the Eagle Eye Golf Club in Bath, Mich. The Cardinals finished with a total of 930 (+66). Micah Skidmore lead the Cardinals finishing in a tie for 14th place, posting 228 to shoot +12 (72-80-76) for the event. Freshman Wyatt Drost finished one shot back of Skidmore (+13) in a tie for 17th at 229 (78-70-81). Sophomore Adam Hansen posted a three-over par 75 in the final round to finish at 235 (+19) in tie for 31st place. Junior Addison Monfils recorded a 238 total to finish +22 for the Championship and in a tie for 38th. Dustin Vogl posted 258 and finished in 57th. Saginaw Valley will finish their fall schedule as they compete in the University of Findlay Invitational on October 8-9 at the Red Hawk Run Golf Course in Findlay, Ohio.
Tiffin - Tiffin University had its best finish ever at the GLIAC Championships, taking second by 11 strokes over Wayne State with a three-round total of 903. Only Grand Valley State finished with a lower total, bettering TU's total by 16 strokes with an 887... The Dragons benefited from their top four golfers all finishing within 6 strokes of each other. Dillon Klein was the top placing Dragons golfer, finishing 7th with rounds of 75, 71, and 77 for 223. Blake DeBruyn was next in 8th place with 225 (76-73-76) while Tyler Maranville took 10th with 226 (77-73-76)... Jon Klein was 17th with a 229 score, improving from an opening round 80 to 77 in round two and 72 in round three. Jason Crow rounded out the top five for TU, firing 265... Overall Tiffin improved from 308 in round one to 294, shaving 14 strokes off their score. Their round three total of 301 was still third best in the round and topped Grand Valley State's 302 score in round three.
Wayne State - Wayne State finished in third place at the 2011 GLIAC Championship, which concluded Monday. The Warriors shot 296 in Sunday’s opening round and were just six strokes behind Grand Valley State in second place. The Warriors were still in second with a 304 as they finished the second round early Monday morning, but fell behind Tiffin as the day progressed. Carding a 914 for the tournament including a 314 in the final round, the Warriors just fended off Northwood (915) and Ferris State (916). Wayne State has finished in the top three at the GLIAC Championship each of the last four years. Senior Jack Mitroka tied for 10th place (226), his best GLIAC Championship finish of his career. Redshirt freshman Reid Dean was the leader in the clubhouse after an opening-round 68 on Sunday, the lowest score of the tournament. He wound up tied for 14th overall (228). Josh Mitroka tied for 21st (232), Rob Favaro was a stroke back in a tie for 24th (233), and Todd Spangler finished in a tie for 34th (237).
