BAY CITY, Mich. - Wayne State University freshman Austin Hill (Troy, Mich./Avondale) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's golf "Athlete of the Week" after finishing in a tie for second place at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Invitational held at Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Indiana over the weekend.

Wayne State University freshman Austin Hill finished tied for second at the University of Wisconson-Parkside Spring Invitational, held at Otter Creek Golf Club in Columbus, Ind. Hill, playing as an individual, carded rounds of 69 and 70 for a two-round total of 139 (-5). Hill and Aaron Monson of the University of Indianapolis finished three strokes behind the medallist, David Shearn of Bellarmine University (Ky.), who shot an eight-under-par total of 136.

Ashland - The AU men's golf team finished sixth at the Northern Kentucky University Spring Classic (Mar. 18) in its first event since returning from its spring trip in Florida... The Eagles carded a 4-over par 292 on Day 2 of the event led by junior Brendan Jenkins (Dublin, Ohio/Bishop Watterson), who shot a 2-under par 70 in the second round. He finished tied for seventh in the event at 2-under with a 142... Senior Jay Overy (Grafton, Ohio/Midview) shot a 72 on Saturday (March 18) for a two-round total of 148. He was tied for 24th... Central Missouri won the NKU Spring Classic with a 12-under par 564. Bellarmine and NKU tied for second place, seven strokes off the pace... For the Eagles, junior Mark Scott (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) was 6-over with a 150 and sophomore Marc Matteson (Ashland, Ohio) finished with a 152 (+8)...The Eagles return to Kentucky in two weeks when they travel to Georgetown, Ky. for the Great Lakes Regional Tournament, beginning March 31.
Ferris State - The FSU men's golf team kicked off
its spring season with a bang as the Bulldogs finished first in the
Wisconsin-Parkside Spring Invitational held at Otter Creek this
past weekend (March 24-25) in Kenosha, Wis... The Bulldogs shot
rounds of 285 and 281 to finish at 566 for the tournament and were
three-stroke winners over runner-up Indianapolis, which carded a
569 after posting a 278 in the final round on the par 72 course
measuring 6,897 yards... Individually, Richard Weisenberger and
Gary Bissell both led Ferris State by placing tied for fourth
overall at 140. Weisenberger carded rounds of 69 and 71 while
Bissell's scores were exactly the opposite with a first-round 71
and a 69 in round two... Trent Davison tied for eighth place at 142
on rounds of 72 and 70 for Ferris State. He was followed by
Garrett Simons, who tied for 13th place with scores of 73 and 71
(144) and Tyler Robinson rounded out the lineup in a tie for 57th
at 153 (79, 74)... A total of 13 schools competed in the
tournament... Kyle Wittenbach competed individually and was tied
for 24th (146) with scores of 72 and 74. Sam Stark tied for
50th as an individual at 152 (74, 78)... The individual winner was
David Shearn of Bellarmine (Ky.) University with a 136, which came
on the strength of a low score of 64 in the first round on Saturday
followed by an even-par 72 on Sunday... The Bulldogs return to
action this weekend as they take part i hte NCAA-II Great Lakes
Region Invitational II held at The Jewell in Georgetown, Ky.
The tourney runs Saturday and Sunday (March 31 & April 1).
Findlay - The University of Findlay men's golf
team tied for sixth place at the Wisconsin-Parkside Invitational,
which concluded on Sunday, March 25 at the Otter Creek Golf Course
in Indiana. The Oilers shot a two-round score of 588 (295,
293) as Ferris State University won the event with a 566 (285,
281)... Michael Schmitmeyer led the Oilers by tying for fourth
place with a 4-under par score of 140 (71, 69) while Marcus Hunt
tied for 13th with an even-par score of 144 (72, 72)... Stephen
Sinchok (76, 75 – 151), Jack Kastor (77, 74 – 151),
Logan Cooke (76, 78 – 154) and Jake North (77, 77 –
154) also competed for Findlay at the event... The Oilers will be
back in action again on March 31 when they compete in the second
NCAA Regional of the season in Georgetown, Kentucky.
Grand Valley State - The GVSU men's golf team
traveled to the Northern Kentucky Spring Classic at Pendleton C.C.
(Mar. 18) and came away with a fourth-place finish, ending the
tournament with a 583 total... GVSU shot an opening round 296 (+8)
on Saturday and followed that up with a 287 (-1) on Sunday, the
third-best round of the day in the tournament... Senior Nick
Gunthorpe (Lansing, Mich.) paced the Lakers with a 144 (E) total
for the two rounds, including a final round 69 (-3) to finish in a
tie for 13th. His final round 69 was tied for the third-best of the
tournament... In a tie for 17th was junior Chase Olsen (White
Pigeon, Mich.) who carded a pair of 73's (+1) to finish at two-over
for the tournament with a 146 total. Joining Olsen in a tie at 146
was sophomore Jack Rider (Kalamazoo, Mich.) who shot rounds of 74
(+2) and 72 (E)... Senior Travis Shooks (Grand Rapids, Mich.)
finished in a tie for 24th with a 148 (+4) total after carding
rounds of 75 (+3) and 73 (+1)... In a tie for 32nd was sophomore
Chris Cunningham (Milford, Mich.) who had rounds of 74 (+2) and 76
(+4) and freshman Joel Siegel (Sparta, Mich.) with rounds of 73
(+1) and 77 (+5) to both finish at 150 (+6) total.
Lake Erie Storm - The Storm will open the 2012 Spring Season on March 31 when they compete in the second NCAA Regional of the season in Georgetown, Kentucky.
Lake Superior State - The Lakers will open the 2012 Spring Season on March 31 when they compete in the second NCAA Regional of the season in Georgetown, Kentucky.
Northern Michigan - The Wildcats will open the 2012 Spring Season on March 31 when they compete in the second NCAA Regional of the season in Georgetown, Kentucky.
Northwood - The Northwood University men’s
golf team finished eighth at the Parkside Spring Invitational
Sunday afternoon (March 25)... The two-day, 36-hole tournament was
held at the Otter Creek G.C., which played as a 6,897 yard par
72... Northwood carded rounds of 303 and 287 to finish at
590. Ferris State was the overall winner with a 10 under par
total of 566. Indianapolis was second at 569... Gilles Medale
(Valence D’Agen, France) was the top finisher for the
Timberwolves. He finished with a one-over par two-day total
of 145 (73-72)... Northwood will compete at the second NCAA
Regional Tournament March 31-April 1.
Ohio Dominican Panthers - The Ohio Dominican men's golf squad recently returned from its Spring Break trip and the ODU Harmony Spring Break Invite, held Thursday and Friday at the Harmony Golf Preserve in Harmony, Florida... In the opening day 36-hole, stroke play tournament, the Panthers took third amongst five teams with a cumulative score of 611 (296-315), five strokes back of runner-up Nyack (N.Y.). Division I member Appalachian State (N.C.) ran away with the team title with a total of 590, while Northwood (Mich.) edged Daemen (N.Y.) for fourth position with a 636... Freshman Conor O'Hea (Middletown, OH) was the low scorer for ODU with a collegiate-best 153 (75-78) to finish in a tie for 10th, the first top-10 finish of his career. Classmate Kyle Burgess (Lancaster, OH) was one shot back in a tie for 12th following a season-low 73 in round one. Junior Kevin Hartoin (Cincinnati, OH) tallied a 155 (72-83) to take 15th, while freshman Eric Brown (Batavia, OH) and senior Gary Wright Jr. (Warsaw, OH) each shot 156 to tie for 17th... Based on the results of Thursday, the teams then squared off in a match play tournament on Friday. Daemen defeated a group of individuals, 4-3, ODU and Northwood battled to a tie for third, 2.5-2.5, and in the championship match, Appalachian State handled Nyack, 5-0... For the Panthers, Burgess rallied for a 1 up decision over the Timberwolves' Turner; Hartoin earned a draw versus Peffer, and Wright took care of Elliott, 3 and 2... Next up for ODU is a visit to Georgetown, Kentucky for the two-day Great Lakes Regional No. 2 at Cherry Blossom GC, beginning on March 31.
Saginaw Valley State - The Saginaw Valley State University men's golf team dropped back one position and finished in ninth place despite a second round six-over-par 294 at the Wisconsin-Parkside Invitational. SVSU recorded a two-day total of 591 (+15). Ferris State won the competition after a ten-under-par 566 total. The event was held at the Otter Creek Golf Course in Indiana and featured many of the top teams in the region... Saginaw Valley was led by freshman Wyatt Drost (Charlevoix, Mich./Charlevoix HS) who posted a one-over-par round of 73 on Sunday and finished in a tie for 19th place with a 145 (+1) total. Red-shirt freshman Micah Skidmore (Saginaw, Mich./Home school) followed up his first round 73 with a three-over-par 75 to finish in a tie for 28th place at 148... The Cardinal lineup was rounded out by Kreg Sherman (Caro, Mich./Caro HS) who recorded a two-over-par 74 in the second round and finished tied for 37th at 150 (+6). Senior Addison Monfils (Big Rapids, Mich./Big Rapids HS) fired matching 76s on the weekend to post a 152 (+8) total and tie for 50th position. Sophomore Adam Hansen (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western HS) found his groove on day two and posted an even-par 72 to finish at 153 total, good for 57th place... The Saginaw Valley golfers will move on to their second regional tournament of the year next weekend (Mar. 31-Apr. 1) when they travel to Georgetown, Kentucky and compete at Cherry Blossom Golf and Country Club.
Tiffin - Tiffin University's golf team got off to
a strong start to the spring season, enjoying a productive second
round at the Tusculum Invitational (Mar. 11) to finish sixth of 18
teams... After firing a 301 in the first round, the Dragons
improved by 8 strokes on day two, finishing with a 293 to post the
fifth-best score of the day and finish with a 594 total. TU missed
a third place finish by just 7 strokes, as King College was fifth
with 593, Walter State JC had 589 for fourth, and Lincoln Memorial
had 587 for third. Tusculum won the event with a 566... Blake
DeBruyn was the top Dragons finisher, taking fourth overall with
rounds of 72 and 70 for 142. Dillon Klein shot 78, then bounced
back with an impressive 69 on day two for 147. Jason Crow shot 154,
Corey Martinez had 157, and Tyler Maranville finished with 158.
Wayne State - In its first tournament of the spring season, Wayne State finished in fifth place at the Wisconsin-Parkside Invitational at Otter Creek in Columbus, Ind. Wayne State, in third place with a team score of 290 after Saturday’s opening round, finished Sunday with a score of 293. Playing individually, Austin Hill tied UIndy’s Aaron Monson for second place (139). Hill shot 69 in the first round and 70 on Sunday in his second tournament of the 2011-12 season. Both Hill and Monson trailed medalist David Shearn from Bellarmine (64-72—136). Alex LaSerra was the top scorer among WSU’s starting five, as he finished in a tie for 13th (71-73—144). Tyler Haksluoto finished a stroke back in a tie for 19th (74-71—145), and Jack Mitroka tied for 24th (72-74—146). Wayne State will compete in NCAA Regional tournaments the next two weekends at Cherry Blossom in Georgetown, Ky., and at Purgatory in Noblesville, Ind.
