BAY CITY, Mich. - Northwood University senior Nick Prokop (Novi, Mich./Novi) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's golf "Athlete of the Week" after finishing in second place at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional #3, held at Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville, Indiana on April 8-9.

Northwood University senior Nick
Prokop placed second overall out of 125 players at the NCAA
Division II Midwest Regional #3, held at Purgatory Golf Club in
Noblesville, Indiana on April 8-9. The senior played his best
tournament of the year, carding scores of 76 and 71 to finish with
a three-over par total of 147. Prokop helped the Timberwolves (608)
to a second-place finish in the event, just one stroke behind
tournament winner Tiffin University (607).

Ashland - Last week the Eagles finished in a tie for fifth place at the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional #4 at Noblesville, Ind. Senior Jay Overy (Grafton, Ohio/Midview) finished in a tie for fourth place. Overy shot 150, five strokes behind the medalist (Jones Brown, Northern Kentucky). Junior Brendan Jenkins (Dublin, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) ended the event tied for 12th place. He shot 153…AU is idle this week. Up next for the Eagles is the Ashland Invitational, Apr. 21-22 at the Country Club of Ashland.
Ferris State - The Ferris State University men's
golf team finished tied for fifth overall at the NCAA-II Great
Lakes Regional Tournament held Sunday and Monday (April 8-9) in
Noblesville, Ind... The Bulldogs carded a team score of 619 over
the two rounds and placed tied with Ashland for fifth place in the
field... Richard Weisenberger led the Bulldogs as he posted scores
of 76 and 75 to card a 151 overall score... FSU's Garrett Simons
tied for 17th overall at 154 with rounds of 75 and 79. He was
followed by Trent Davison in a tie for 39th place at 157 on totals
of 76 and 81... The Bulldogs' Gary Bissell tallied a 158 to place
tied for 48th in the field on indentical rounds of 79 each...
Finally, Kyle Wittenbach placed tied for 81st overall at 163 as he
carded scores of 83 and 80 in the two days of action on the par 72
course... The team title was won by Tiffin at 607 and the Dragons
were followed by Northwood in second place at 608 for the
tournament. Northern Kentucky placed third at 610 and Jones
Brown of the Norse finished first individually at 145 overall...
FSU is next slated to take part in the Detroit Titans Invitational
on Friday and Saturday, April 13-14, in Highland, Mich.
Findlay - The University of Findlay men's golf
team tied for third at the Great Lakes Regional after shooting a
two-day score of 610 (305, 305) at the tournament, which was held
at the Purgatory Golf Course in Indianapolis, Ind. The Oilers
tied Northern Kentucky at the event as 25 schools competed in the
tournament... Marcus Hunt led the charge by finishing third with a
148. Hunt shot a 73 in the first round and then came back
with a 75 in the second to finish three shots off the lead... Logan
Cooke tied for sixth with a 151 (77, 74) while Michael Schmitmeyer
(78, 78 – 156), Jake North (81, 78 – 159) and Kirby
Doidge (77, 86 – 163) also competed for Findlay at the
event... The Oilers will compete again on April 21-22 at the
Ashland Invitational.
Grand Valley State - The Grand Valley State men's
golf team finished up Great Lakes Regional #4 at Purgatory G.C.
with an eighth-place finish after shooting a final round 311 (+23)
on Monday (Apr. 9)... Senior Travis Shooks (Grand Rapids,
Mich./Grand Rapids C.C.) had the low round of the day for the
Lakers, shooting a three-over 75 to finish at 151 (+7) for the
tournament, good enough for a sixth-place tie on the individual
leaderboard... Senior Nick Gunthorpe (Lansing, Mich./Ovid-Elsie)
improved on his first round score, shooting a final round 76 (+4)
to finish at 153 (+9), good for a 12th-place tie... Sophomore Chris
Cunningham (Milford, Mich.), who had a solid first round with a 77,
struggled to an 82 (+8) in the final round to finish with a 159
(+15) total... On the flip side, sophomore Jack Rider (Kalamazoo,
Mich./Hackett) improved immensely on his first round 84, shooting a
78 (+6) on day two to finish at 162 (+18) for the tournament...
Also competing for the Lakers was junior Chase Olsen (White Pigeon,
Mich.) who shot a final round 86 (+14) for a 166 (+22) total... The
Lakers, who already claimed a spot in the NCAA Super Regional due
to winning the GLIAC Tournament Championship in October, finished
eighth with a two-round total of 621 (+45)... GVSU will travel to
Highland, Mich. to take part in the Detroit Titans Invitational at
Prestwick Village G.C. this weekend.
Lake Erie Storm - The Lake Erie College men's golf team finished in 25th place in the final NCAA Great Lakes Regional event of the year, posting a team score of 671 (+95, 329-342) on Monday (April 9) at Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville, Ind... The Storm was led by senior Frank Whites III (Wickliffe, Ohio/Wickliffe). He finished tied for 89th-place individually (79-86, 165).
Lake Superior State - Freshman Doug Piesko (Washington, Mich.) shot a 77-81—158 to tie for 48th place and lead LSSU at the NCAA Regional #3 in Indianapolis. Piesko has the Lakers’ low average of 76.6. Junior Mike Caputo (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) tied for 61st with a 79-81—160. The Lakers tied for 21st among 25 teams.
Northern Michigan - The Northern Michigan University golf team finished tied for 21st at the two-day tournament at Purgatory Golf Course in Noblesville, Ind. on Sunday and Monday (April 8-9). The Wildcats finished with a team score of 650 and were led by sophomore Mike Murphy who had a 21st place finish with an 11-over par 155... Murphy opened the tournament with a three-over 75 on Sunday and shot an 80 on the second day... Sophomore Jared Reid was tied for 68th with a 161. He shot a six-over 78 on Sunday and an 83 to round out the tourney. Freshman Colten Thewis was two shots back of Reid with a 163; good for a tie in 81st. He shot an 83 and an 80... Freshman Aryton Mantha (86-85) and junior Adam Huss (91-90) also golfed for the ‘Cats... Tiffin won the tournament with a 607. Jones Brown of Northern Kentucky was the low medalist with one-over 145... Northern travels to Ohio on April 20 for the Ashland Invitational.
Northwood - The Northwood University men’s
golf team claimed a second place finish out of 25 teams at the
third NCAA Regional Monday afternoon (April 9)... The two-day,
36-hole tournament was held at the Purgatory Golf Club in
Nobesville, Ind. The course played as a 7,268 yard, par 72...
After opening with a first day score of 310, Northwood was tied for
seventh place overall. But the Timberwolves responded on day
two, posting the best team score of the tournament at 298.
That total was three strokes better than Tiffin’s first round
mark of 301. Tiffin was the overall winner at 607, one stroke
ahead of Northwood at 608. Findlay and Northern Kentucky tied
for third at 610... Leading the way for Northwood was Nick Prokop
(Novi, Mich.). The senior played his best tournament of the
year, carding scores of 76 and 71 to finish with a three-over par
total of 147. He placed second overall out of 125 players.
Brad Elliott (Sunfield, Mich./Lake Odessa) carded rounds of 81-72
to tie for 12th overall... Northwood will compete at the Ashland
Invitational April 21-22.
Ohio Dominican Panthers - The Panthers were idle this weekend for the Easter holidays and return to the course for the two-day Strimer Memorial Invitational, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan at Oakhaven Golf Course in Delaware, beginning on Saturday, April 14.
Saginaw Valley State - The SVSU golf team posted a final round 321 (+33) and finished with a 636 total in 13th position at the final Great Lakes Regional tournament of the season. Tiffin University won the tournament with a two round total of 607... Saginaw Valley was led by Micah Skidmore (Saginaw, Mich./Home school) who fired a seven-over-par round of 79 and finished in a tie for 17th place. Dustin Vogl (Bay City, Mich./Western HS) was close behind as he fired his second consecutive round of 80 to finish tied for 61st with a 160 total. Wyatt Drost (Charlevoix, Mich./Charlevoix HS) grinded out an 81 (+9) in the tough conditions on Monday and finished in a tie for 55th at 159 (+15)... Kreg Sherman (Caro, Mich.) ended up tied for 81st as he recorded 81 (+9) in the extremely windy weather in southern Indiana, while Adam Hansen (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western HS) rounded out the Cardinal lineup with a round of 82 (+10) on the final day of the regional tournament to finish at 172 total... The Saginaw Valley golfers will travel to Ohio for the Ashland Invitational at the Country Club of Ashland.
Tiffin - Tiffin University won its first Great
Lakes Regional tournament, nipping Northwood University 607-608 in
the event hosted by the University of Indianapolis April 8-9.
Northern Kentucky and Findlay tied for third with totals of 610
each... The win virtually guarantees the Dragons of a trip to
Jefferson City, Missouri for the NCAA Super Regional May 9. TU was
sixth in the region heading into the Indianapolis regional... The
Dragons fired a 301 in round one to take the lead on the first day.
They held solid on day two, shooting 306 and holding off a
hard-charging Northwood squad which improved by 12 strokes in round
two... Dillon Klein finished in fourth place, shooting 74 on the
first day and 76 on day two for a 150 score. Jason Crow came in
sixth, shooting 73-78 for 151. Blake DeBruyn gave the Dragons a
consistent performance, shooting 76 in both rounds to finish with
152. The Dragons' top three golfers finished within two strokes of
each other... Jon Klein finished with 156 while Tyler Maranville
finished with 159, as TU put its top five golfers within 9 strokes
of each other.
Wayne State - The Wayne State University golf team finished in ninth place as the third and final regional tournament of the 2011-12 season concluded Monday at Purgatory Golf Club... The Warriors, who were tied for fifth after the opening round, shot 306 on Sunday and 316 in the second round, 15 shots behind tournament champion Tiffin University (301-306--607). Only four strokes separated fifth from 10th place as all 25 teams battled windy conditions on the course... Jack Mitroka (Riverview, Mich.) was the top finishing Warrior, as his score of 154 put him in a tie for 17th place (76-78). Three of his teammates were a stroke back from each other for top-40 positions... Tyler Haksluoto (St. Clair Shores, Mich./South Lake) shot 76 in Monday's round for a 155 to tie for 21st. Rob Favaro (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova), who was tied for fifth after the first day, wound up tied for 28th (74-82--156)... Alex LaSerra (Jackson, Mich./Napoleon) tied for 39th (77-80--157) and Austin Hill (Troy, Mich./Avondale) finished in a tie for 68th place (79-82--161)... Wayne State will play in the IUP Cecil C. Spadafora Invitational next week in Indiana, Pa.
