Ferris State's Weller, Northwood's Lippoldt Qualify for 2017 U.S. Amateur

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- A pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's golfers are headed to California for the 2017 U.S. Amateur Championships.

In a qualifying event, Ferris State's Jack Weller carded scores of 74 and 64 while tying the 18-hole course record in the final round and setting a new personal career tournament low at Forest Akers West Golf Course in Lansing. His eight-under par 64 over the final 18 holes was bogey free.

"I'm very excited to get a chance to compete on the biggest stage in Amateur golf," said Weller. "Being able to represent Ferris State, my family, and my friends makes this experience something I will never forget and I look toward to making the most of it while I'm there."

Cameron Lippoldt, a senior on the Northwood University men's golf team, also qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championships. Lippoldt is the first player in program history to qualify for the event.

After carding rounds of 72 and 69 at Forrest Akers West in East Lansing, Lippoldt was tied for the third and final qualifying spot

The U.S. Amateur Championships will take place August 14-20 at the Bel-Air Country Club and Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, Calif.  Players will play 36 holes of stroke play August 14-15 before the top 64 remaining competitors will play match play. A total of 312 players will take part in the event.

Grsand Valley State's Alex Scott finished tied for third and is the first alternate.
