WSU's Seys Captures GLIAC Men's Golf Player of the Year Honors; All-Conference Teams Revealed

GLIAC — Wayne State senior Brendan Seys has been named 2020 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Golf Player of the Year announced by the conference office on Wednesday (April 15), while Grand Valley State freshman Charles Delong was named GLIAC Freshman of the Year. The 2020 All-GLIAC Men's Golf Team has also been announced.


PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Brendan Seys - Wayne State

Seys is the fifth Warrior to earn the Player of the Year trophy and the first since Eric Johnson in 2012-13.  He is a member of the All-GLIAC First Team for the third time and was the GLIAC Freshman of the Year, while earning a spot on the All-GLIAC Second Team in 2016-17. Seys, a two-time GLIAC Player of the Week, was in the starting lineup for all six varsity tournaments and finished with a team-best stroke average of 70.5 over 14 total rounds.  His low round was 66 (second lowest in program history) and he had four rounds in the 60s and eight rounds under par.  Seys won the Findlay Doc Spragg Fall Invitational (9/23-24) with a 209 (69, 69, 71) and the 54-hole total of 209 is a program record for three rounds.  He was the top individual at the WSU HawksHead Invitational (9/28) with a 66.  The senior had three second-pace results beginning at the Northwood Invitational (10/6-7) where he tied-for-second with a 216 (70, 73, 73).  Seys shot a 144 (72, 72) to finish second at the WSU Motor City Invitational (10/13-14) and finished second at the Davenport Panther Invitational (10/19-20) with a 138 (70, 68).  His worst finish was a fourth-place result at the GVSU Don Underwood Invitational (9/9-10) with a 215 (71, 74, 70).

 

FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR: Charles Delong - Grand Valley St.

 Charles Delong (DeWitt, Mich.) has been named the 2020 GLIAC Freshman of the Year it was announced by the league office. Delong turned in an outstanding freshman campaign in which he won twice and finished among the top two three times in five tournaments played. His scoring average of 71.69 for 13 rounds played ranks third all-time in GVSU annals for a season. Delong opened his career by taking medalist honors in his first collegiate tournament (Don Underwood Invite) with a -3 (210) and closed the fall with a second-place finish at the Northwood Invitational and a win in record-setting fashion at the Davenport Panther Invitational. Delong carded a two-round 134 (-8), including an opening round 66 (-5) which is tied for second all-time in the GVSU record books for a low round. Delong is the fifth Laker to be named GLIAC Freshman of the Year.
