GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its men's golfer weekly awards following the first week of tournaments, with Ashland junior Beau Bayerl claiming top honors in men's action. With only three women's golf programs competing in the opening week of tournaments, the first Women's Golfer of the Week honor will be awarded next week.
MEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK: Beau Bayerl - Ashland
It's been a pretty good 24 hours for Ashland University junior Beau Bayerl. Bayerl, a transfer from NCAA Division I Akron and an Ashland native, won the Music City Invitational in Old Hickory, Tenn., on Tuesday (March 16) afternoon. On Wednesday (March 17) afternoon, he was named the first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Golfer of the Week of the new season. At the two-day event in metropolitan Nashville, Bayerl carded 68-67—135 to earn medalist honors by one shot. During those 36 holes, he recorded two eagles and 10 birdies, and his 9-under finish is tied for the best by an Eagle men's golfer since 1996-97. Bayerl helped Ashland finish in a tie for third place in the 17-team event. He is the first Ashland men's golfer to earn GLIAC Golfer of the Week honors since Jay Overy in September of 2011.
HONORABLE MENTION (TOP 10 FINISHERS): Austin Deiters (NU), Thomas Hursey (FSU), Grant Haefner (WSU)
