GVSU's DeLong receives GLIAC Men's Golf Player of the Year honors; all-conference teams revealed

GLIAC — Grand Valley State's Charles DeLong has been named 2022 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Golf Player of the Year as announced by the conference office on Wednesday, May 11. Northwood' Evan Johnson earned Freshman of the Year honors. Davenport head coach Joe Hatch received Golf Coach of the Year after leading the Panthers to the 2022 GLIAC Championship.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Charles DeLong, Grand Valley State

Charles DeLong won the individual NCAA DII Men's Golf Regional Championship title scoring one-under par (215) at the NCAA DII Central/Midwest Regional Tournament. DeLong is one of only three Laker men in program history to have won the individual regional championship. He led Grand Valley State to a second place finish at regionals in a sudden death match for first-place against Central Missouri. DeLong won three tournaments in the regular season including the Arendsen Invitational (207), Motor City Invite (135), and the Bill Blazer Memorial (140). He placed within the top-five at eight tournaments, including his four first-place finishes. He was named GLIAC Golfer of the Week four times this year, twice in the Fall and twice in the Spring. DeLong enters the National Championship ranked 17th in DII. 


FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
Evan Johnson, Northwood

Evan Johnson is the third player in Northwood history to earn GLIAC Freshman of the Year, joining Dane Yarnell (2001) and Luigi Spadafora (2006). Johnson finished his first season at Northwood with the team’s top scoring average at 74.9. He picked up a pair of top-10 finishes for the Timberwolves and ended the year with a personal winning percentage of .649 (469-254). Johnson was extremely consistent in the spring portion of the schedule – over the final four events of the season, he shot 76 or better in all 10 rounds.

COACH OF THE YEAR
Joe Hatch, Davenport

Davenport's third-year head coach, Joe Hatch, was named GLIAC Coach of the Year after leading Davenport to the first GLIAC Championship in program history. The Panthers won the 36-hole stroke play portion of the league tournament by 21 strokes and Hatch's sophomore, Bradley Mogire, earned medalist honors. DU then defeated Northwood, 4-1, in the match play semifinals and Ferris State, 3-2, in the finals.
