GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following the second week of the 2019 men's soccer season. Saginaw Valley senior midfielder Connor Rutz earned GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week accolades, while teammate Mason Maziasz claimed GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance in goal.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Connor Rutz - Saginaw Valley St.
Senior Connor Rutz had four shots, putting two on goal and connecting for one goal in the Cardinals' 3-0 victory over Alderson Broaddus on Sunday afternoon. Rutz added another four shots in Friday's 0-0 draw against Tiffin as well. The Cardinals are now 2-1-1 overall on the season and open GLIAC play this weekend with home matches versus Davenport and Ashland.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Mason Maziasz - Saginaw Valley St.
Junior goalkeeper Mason Maziasz (2-0-1) stopped all six shots on goal over the weekend in posting a pair of shutouts in matches with Tiffin and Alderson Broaddus. Maziasz had two saves in the team's 0-0 draw on Friday at home versus Tiffin before recording another four saves in Sunday's 3-0 victory over Alderson Broaddus. Mason now has three shutouts in four total matches this season for the Cardinals.
