GVSU Men, Wayne State Women Continue to Lead After Day 2 of 2012 GLIAC Swimming & Diving Championships

JENISON, Mich. - The Wayne State University women’s team and the Grand Valley State University men’s team are in the lead after Day 2 of the 2012 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Swimming and Diving Championships, being held at the Jenison Aquatics Center in Jenison, Mich.

Thursday’s finals session started with the University of Indianapolis claiming the 200-yard freestyle relay with an NCAA Division II “A” cut time of 1:33.37.  Five other GLIAC Teams, Ashland University in second place, Wayne State University in third place, Grand Valley State University in fourth place, Hillsdale College in fifth place, and the University of Findlay in sixth place, all earned NCAA D-II “B” cuts in the event.

The men’s 200-yard freestyle relay saw four teams earn NCAA “B” cuts led by the Wayne State team which place first with a time of 1:22.07.

WSU senior Catherine Leix recorded an NCAA “A” cut in the 500-yard freestyle after finishing first with a time of 4:54.40.  All eight swimmers in the finals men’s 500-yard freestyle earned NCAA “B” cuts, led by Wayne State sophomore Kristia Larsen’s first-place time of 4:30.02.

A total of six swimmers posted NCAA “B” cut times in the women’s 200-yard individual medley.  WSU sophomore Gloria Martinez Perez placed first in the event with a time of 2:03.28.  Two swimmers earned NCAA “A” cuts in the men’s 200 IM when first-place finisher Julian Milinkovskyi  of Lake Erie College clocked a time of 1:48.79, and second place finisher  Aaron Beebe of Grand Valley State posted a time of 1:49.34.

Ashland University junior Julie Widmann claimed the women’s 50-yard freestyle title with a time of 22.84, while Wayne State senior Andrey Seryy took the men’s 50-yard freestyle crown with an NCAA “A” cut time of 19.72.

Wayne State swept the top three podiums spots in the men’s one-meter diving event when Dylan Szegedi (476.20), Jeff Grant (419.95) and Darrin Driesenga (415.20) finished first, second and third, respectively.  

In the final events of the evening, Wayne State took the 400-yard medley relay title in a time of 3:44.78, While GVSU claimed the men’s 400-yard medley relay crown with a time of 3:16.13.

The 2012 GLIAC Swimming and Diving Championships resume are Friday morning with the Day three preliminaries.
