Three WSU Swimmers Earn CoSIDA Academic All-America Accolades

Larsen, Maleski and Scott honored for outstanding seasons both in the pool and classroom.

Three members of the Wayne State University swimming and diving program were recognized on Wednesday as they were voted to the Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large teams for Division II.  Senior swimmers Kristian Larsen (Frederiksberg, Denmark) and Kayla Scott (Rochester, Mich./Adams) and sophomore Elly Maleski (Cedar, Mich./Traverse City West) were honored for outstanding performances both in the pool and in the classroom.

Scott was voted to the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Women's At-Large First Team for the second straight season.  The senior was a 17-time All-American and won seven individual national championships during her career. As a senior, she earned five All-America honors and was a national champion in the 100 breaststroke and 200 freestyle relay. Scott placed first or second at the NCAA Division II Women's Swimming & Diving National Championships in the 100 breaststroke all four years of her collegiate career. The psychology major with a 3.69 G.P.A. helped Wayne State to four consecutive GLIAC titles.  Scott becomes the eighth WSU student-athlete to be a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American joining Tim Flannery (Baseball - 1976-77), Paul Janas (Baseball - 1974-75), Matthew Laschuk (Swimming - 2010-11), Catherine Leix (Swimming - 2011-12), Kevin Ponticelli (Baseball - 1978-79), Jennifer Smith (Softball - 1992-93), and Logan White (Softball - 2012-14).

Larsen was named to the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Men's At-Large Second Team after earning GLIAC All-Academic Team honors for the third consecutive year.  He was a 24-time All-American (15-time 1st Team [3-Individual/12-Relays] + 9-time Honorable Mention [6-Individual/3-Relays]) during his collegiate career.  He won 11 conference titles (3-Individual/8-Relays) in his four years with the Green and Gold and at the NCAA National Championships, Larsen was an All-American all four years in the 200 free, 200 free relay, 400 free relay and 800 free relay.  He maintained a 3.43 cumulative G.P.A. as a mechanical engineering major.

Maleski was selected to the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Women's At-Large Second Team in her first year of eligibility (freshmen are not eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades).  She was a Five-time First Team All-American in 2014 having won a national title anchoring the 200 freestyle relay (1:31.64) that broke Division II record.  Maleski also led off the second place 200 medley relay (1:40.93) and joined the second place 400 freestyle relay (3:21.99) .  In addition, Maleski led off the third place 400 medley relay (3:42.68) and placed sixth in the 100 backstroke (54.94).  She has a 3.86 cumulative G.P.A. in biomedical engineering honors.

WSU has had 18 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in the past four years, including the College Division At-Large Academic All-American of the Year in 2011-12 in swimmer Catherine Leix.
