FSU’s Galarneau Named “Freshman of the Year,” NU’s Colestock Tabbed “Coach of the Year”
BAY CITY, Mich. — Northwood
University senior Teddy Mebounou (Courbevoie,
France) has earned the 2012 Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men’s Tennis “Athlete of
the Year” award as announced by the conference office. Ferris
State University rookie Laurent Galarneau (Lake Orion,
Mich.) was named the conference’s “Freshman of
the Year” while Northwood head coach Zane
Colestock was tabbed as the GLIAC “Coach of the
Year”.
Mebounou completed a remarkable comeback season
by earning GLIAC “Player of the Year” honors for the
second time in his career. He finished the year with an 8-2
record in singles and a 12-1 mark in doubles, all of which were
played at the No. 1 position. In GLIAC play, Mebounou went
5-0 conference doubles and 5-1 in GLIAC doubles. Mebounou is
currently ranked No. 1 in the region and No. 11 nationally in
doubles with Marcus Oliveira. Mebounou previously won the
GLIAC “Player of the Year” award in 2007 and has earned
First Team All-GLIAC honors three times in his career (2006, 2007,
2012).
Galarneau earned GLIAC “Freshman of the
Year” laurels after posting a 12-8 overall singles mark
to date in his initial season with the Bulldogs, including a 7-2
ledger in league action as the Bulldogs’ number one
player. Meanwhile, the freshman from Quebec teamed with
senior Steven Roberts to record a 15-6 doubles mark and the duo
lost only once (7-1) in conference doubles play at the top
flight. Galarneau won five of his final eight league singles
encounters and together with Roberts picked up a victory in seven
of his 10 most recent doubles competitions heading into the NCAA
Tournament. His efforts helped the Bulldogs win their first league
tournament crown since 1999 as FSU snapped Northwood’s
12-year run as the conference tournament winner.
Colestock was named the GLIAC “Coach of the
Year” for the 11th time in his career this season.
Colestock led the Timberwolves to their 18th straight GLIAC
Championship and national ranking of as high as 13. The
Timberwolves complete their first undefeated regular season in over
a decade this year, going 13-0 during the spring season. As a
team, the Timberwolves posted a record of 49-5 (.907) in conference
singles and 24-3 in conference doubles (.889).
Joining Mebounou and Galarneau on the 2012 All-GLIAC First Team
are: junior Felipe Baptista of Lake Superior State
University; sophomore Andrew Darrell of Grand
Valley State University; senior Kyle Collette of
the University of Findlay; junior Thomas Ducret of
Wayne State University; sophomore Jean Menard of
Northwood; and seniors Anders Sandholm and
Luka Stupar of Michigan Technological
University.
