HOUGHTON, Mich. – Kristin Yep has been named as the new head coach of the men's and women's tennis teams at Michigan Tech, Director of Athletics Suzanne Sanregret announced on Monday. Yep arrives at Tech from NCAA Division III Whittier College (Calif.) where she was the head coach for the men's and women's tennis programs the past two seasons.
"I am pleased to welcome Kristin to Michigan Tech," Sanregret said. "Throughout the interview she demonstrated not only the playing and coaching skills to lead our teams, but an enthusiasm to work with student-athletes and help them grow as athletes, students, and members of our community."
"I'm honored to join Michigan Tech athletics as the new head coach of men's and women's tennis," Yep said. "I'm very excited to be a Husky and to give the teams a positive collegiate athletics experience. Both programs have a lot of potential for growth with outstanding student-athletes."
Yep brings a wealth of experience to Tech having coached at the collegiate level, as a teaching professional, and professional playing experience. Yep was named the 2019 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Coach of the Year. She began her collegiate coaching career as the men's assistant coach at Whittier for the 2015 season before becoming the head coach of both the men's and women's programs in the summer of 2017.
"I am extremely excited to have Kristin join our department," Associate Athletic Director for External Relations Joel Isaacson said. "She brings a positive hard working attitude to Michigan Tech with a diverse tennis background. I look forward to working with Kristin as she mentors our tennis student-athletes."
Yep competed collegiately at Concordia University Irvine where she earned All-America accolades in both singles and doubles.Yep started out competing in Southern California juniors beginning at age 15, touring around Asia and North America to compete in International Tennis Federation (ITF) juniors tournaments. She went on to establish an ITF junior world ranking of 700. Yep earned both a Bachelor of Arts in Exercise Sport Science in 2012 and completed her Master of Arts in Coaching and Athletic Administration in 2019 at Concordia University Irvine.
Yep also worked as an intern conference commissioner at the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference office since January of 2019. She assisted the conference office with tasks for championships, governance, compliance, scheduling, sports information, special events, and SCIAC record books. Yep became a teaching professional in 2005 providing private and group lessons.
The Michigan Tech women's tennis team is currently ranked seventh in the ITA NCAA Division II Midwest Region Poll. The Huskies are currently 9-3 on the season and finished with a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference record of 7-2 during the fall. They will be back on the court for the spring season beginning in late February when they travel to Hillsdale College on the 23rd.
The men's tennis team begins competition on March 6 at the Spring Tennis Fest in Hilton Head, South Carolina followed by the GLIAC opener at Ashland March 21. Yep officially begins her duties on February 10.
