FSU's Guerre and Doren, and WSU's Spicer Receive Men's Tennis top Honors; All-GLIAC Teams Announced

GLIAC - The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its 2021 All-GLIAC Men's Tennis Team following the Conference Tournament held at the Midland Tennis Center. Ferris State's Mathis Guerre was named GLIAC Player of the Year, while the Bulldogs Head Coach Mark Doren received his first GLIAC Men's Coach of the Year honor. Wayne State's Dominic Spicer received the GLIAC Freshman of the Year Award.

.PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Mathis Guerre  - Ferris State

Ferris State University senior standout Mathis Guerre led the Bulldogs to both the GLIAC Regular Season and Tournament Championships this season. The Bulldogs, who are unbeaten at 15-0 overall, claimed their fifth regular-season title in the last six tries and the program's fourth tournament crown in the last five opportunities this year. As the squad's number one player, Guerre posted a combined 21-5 overall singles and doubles record to date this year, including a 9-3 mark in singles action and a 12-2 doubles ledger. The four-year letterwinner went 6-1 in GLIAC regular-season doubles play and has led FSU to the program's 24th all-time NCAA Tournament appearance

FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR: Dominic Spicer - Wayne State

Spicer compiled a 6-1 mark at first singles in GLIAC play this year, along with a 6-1 record at No. 1 doubles with Luke Laws.  He went 2-0 in singles this past weekend at the GLIAC Tournament to improve his season record to 10-4 in singles, with two of his four losses coming against Division 1 opponents. In 2019-20, Spicer did not win a singles match above the fourth flight, and primarily played second doubles. His selection marks the fourth time a WSU tennis student-athlete has been selected GLIAC Freshman of the Year joining Miguel Cobbs (2004), Antoine Marenaud (2007) and Mats Westkamp (2017).

COACH OF THE YEAR: Mark Doren - Ferris State

Ferris State University men's and women's tennis head coach Mark Doren has keyed the Bulldogs' historic tennis march this year, leading both program's to the GLIAC Regular Season and Tournament Championships, marking the first time since 1999 in which FSU has went a perfect four-for-four in garnering all the league titles. Under his watch, the Bulldog women's team has posted a 16-1 record and claimed their first GLIAC titles since 2002 this spring, winning their final 16 matches in a row to date. On the men's side, the Bulldogs remain unbeaten at 16-0 on the year and the squad won their fifth regular-season title in the last six tries along with their fourth tournament championship in the previous five. This year, the Bulldogs are a combined 32-1 in men's and women's tennis action and both squads finished unblemished in the GLIAC. The men will make their 23rd all-time NCAA Tournament appearance while the women's berth is the school's first since 2015.
