GLIAC Leads Nation with 84 USTFCCCA 2015 Indoor First-Team All-Americans

NEW ORLEANS – All-America honorees for the 2015 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field season were announced Monday afternoon by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Despite coming up short on the team titles, GLIAC student-athletes collected 84 First-Team awards, 37 more than the next closest conference.

Student-athletes earned First-Team USTFCCCA All-America honors by virtue of finishing among the top eight in their events, including as a member of a relay, at this past weekend’s NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Birmingham, Alabama. For the first time, Second-Team honors were bestowed upon those finishing ninth through 12th.

The Adams State men, after finishing runner-up a year ago by 1½ points, punched through to win the their second indoor title in program history, 45-40-40, over Findlay and Grand Valley State.

Three men and three women earned three First-Team All-America honors apiece. With a second consecutive sweep of the men’s 60- and 200-meter titles, Tiffin’s Lamar Hargrove headlined the three men who achieved that honor.

The GLIAC may have had its teams shut out of the top spots on the team podiums, the conference was by far the best-represented conference in terms of First-Team All-America honors.

Three teams earned 11 First-Team honors each: GLIAC rivals Grand Valley State and Findlay, along with Saint Augustine’s. Team champion Adams State and Ashland – another GLIAC program – finished with nine.

The runner-up Hillsdale women got 11 First-Team efforts, edging out Grand Valley State with 10. Champion Central Missouri finished with seven First-Team nods, behind Adams State and Lincoln (Mo.) with nine each and U-Mary and Ashland with eight.

All told, the GLIAC accounted for 46 First-Team men’s honors and 38 First-Team women’s awards. A distant second on the men’s side was the RMAC with 35, with the MIAA third with 26. Next up for the women was the NSIC with 28, followed by the MIAA with 21.
