LONDON - Former Ashland University thrower Kibwe Johnson will participate in the finals of the men’s hammer throw at the 2012 Olympics. On Friday (Aug. 3) in London, Johnson qualified for Sunday’s (Aug. 5) finals. Johnson’s best effort measured 77.17 meters. That was the fifth best throw on Friday. This is Johnson’s first appearance at the Olympic Games.
The finals will consist of 12 throwers. All of those participants will get three throws. The top eight throwers after that will get another three throws.
AU strength and conditioning coach A.G. Kruger did not reach Sunday’s competition. Kruger’s best throw was 72.13. He fouled on his other two attempts. This was Kruger’s third trip to the Olympic Games. Kruger’s throw put him 25th out of the 41 throwers who started on Friday.
The top mark on Friday belonged to Hungary’s Krisztian Pars. His best mark was 79.37.
