The Northwood University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced the hiring of Jamie Moreno as the new head coach of the men's and women's track & field/cross country programs. He will begin his duties as head coach this summer.
"We are very excited to bring Jamie on board to take over our programs," said Northwood Athletic Director Pat Riepma. "He brings a great deal of experience and knowledge to our department. I know he will do an outstanding job leading our student-athletes."
Moreno brings eight years of experience as a collegiate head coach to Northwood. From 2008-12, he led the programs at Florida Southern College. Moreno was put in charge of maintain the tradition of the FSC cross country teams while starting the track and field programs. He guided his teams to a total of three Sunshine State men's cross country championships and a pair of runner-up finishes on the women's side. A total of 20 runners earned All-Conference honors and 17 claimed USTCAA Academic All-America recognition. Moreno was named the Sunshine State Conference men's cross country Coach of the Year three times at FSC.
Prior to his time at FSC, Moreno started the cross country teams at William Woods University in Fulton, Mo. He was the head coach for cross country and track at William Woods from 2004-08, leading his programs to four cross country conference championships (three women's, one men's). A three-time American Midwest Conference Coach of the Year winner, Moreno had 39 athletes named to the All-Conference teams. He also led eight others to Daktronics Academic All-American Cross Country & Track honors.
Moreno had a pair of stints as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Central Missouri. He was there for the 2012-13 season, working with the cross country programs and the distance/middle distance runners in track. Moreno helped the teams claim a national qualifier in cross country and four All-conference honorees this season. His previous time at UCM was from 2000-04, where the team had a pair of All-Americans and a total of 25 individuals claimed MIAA All-Conference honors.
Moreno got his start coaching track/cross country at the high school level. He coached at Warrensburg High School in Warrensburg, Mo. from 1995-2003, serving as the head cross country coach and the assistant track & field coach.
A graduate of Central Missouri, Moreno had a distinguished career for the Mules. He was a four-year letterman in both cross country and track and field. Moreno claimed All-MIAA honors 10 times in his career. He was a part of the 1993 cross country team that placed fifth nationally and was later inducted into the UCM Athletic Hall of Fame.
"I am excited to be coming to Northwood as the next head coach," said Moreno. "I felt so welcome from the moment I stepped on campus and through the whole interview process."
"I have no doubt that the administration, coaches, and athletes are committed to moving up in the GLIAC and getting more athletes and teams to the national meets. I hope to bring some knowledge and experience, a passion, commitment, and some stability in helping to make this happen in the years to come."
Moreno earned his degree in Business Administration-Management from Central Missouri in December of 1994. He also earned his Master's degree in Educational Technology from UCM in August of 2001.
