GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly softball awards following Week 1 of the 2020 season. Grand Valley St. sophomore shortstop Lydia Goble was named Player of the Week, while Wayne State sophomore Paige Ameel was selected Pitcher of the Week.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK  - Lydia Goble, Grand Valley State

GVSU sophomore Lydia Goble has earned GLIAC Player of the Week for the opening week of the 2020 season. She hit a team-best .571 (8-14) with a home run, double, six RBI and four runs scored as the Lakers split their four games at the Lewis Dome Tournament. The reigning GLIAC Freshman of the Year has a 1.482 OPS after the weekend and a .625 OBP. She had at least one hit in each game and had multiple hits in three of the four. Her home run gave the Lakers the lead in the top of the first inning in an eventual 5-1 win over Winona State. Defensively, she made just one error in 19 total chances in her first weekend moving to shortstop.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK - Paige Ameel, Wayne State

Ameel recorded two wins (both shutouts) and two saves in four appearances at the Lewis Dome Invitational. She tossed a two-hit shutout on Friday vs. Hillsdale, and followed with a four-hit shutout of Missouri S&T on Saturday. Ameel earned a save in both Sunday victories. She hurled 2.2 innings of hitless relief vs. #17-Winona State. Ameel entered with runners on the corners and one out. After a walk, she struck out the next two batters with the bases loaded then retired all six Winona hitters over the final two innings.
