Northern Michigan's Helm, Bundzis Sweep GLIAC Swimming Athlete of the Week Awards

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced the second weekly awards of the swimming and diving season. Northern Michigan senior Renars Bundzis earned GLIAC Men's Athlete of the Week accolades, while NMU junior Rachel Helm captured GLIAC Women's Athlete of the Week honors for the second straight week.


MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Renars Bundzis - Northern Michigan

On the men’s side, Northern Michigan senior Renars Bundzis earned the recognition after winning the 200-yard Backstroke with a time of 1:52.51.  He was second in the 100-yard Backstroke and took third in the 25-yard Backstroke. He also helped two relays touch first, the 125-yard Medley Relay and the 400-yard Medley Relay. He is the second NMU Men’s Swim & Dive team member to earn the award this season.


FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Rachel Helm - Northern Michigan

Northern Michigan junior Rachel Helm has been named the GLIAC Women’s Swimming Athlete of the Week for two consecutive weeks after earning the honor last week as well. The junior highlighted her results by breaking her own PEIF Pool record in the 100-yard Backstroke with a new record time of 55.76 during Saturday’s meet with St. Cloud State University and Northern State University. She was also a member of the winning 400-yard Medley Relay team. During Friday’s meet, Helm captured the 75-yard Backstroke in 41.55 and helped the Wildcats win the 125-yard Medley Relay.
