GLIAC Announces Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its fourth weekly awards of the 2020-21 outdoor track and field season. Saginaw Valley St. secured both weekly awards on the women's side, with senior Lauren Huebner earning track athlete of the week and sophomore teammate Cheyenne Williamson securing field athlete of the week. On the men's side, Ashland swept the weekly awards with senior Trevor Bassitt earning Men's Track Athlete of the Week, and  senior Alex Hill being named Field Athlete of the Week.   


WOMEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK -  Lauren Huebner, Saginaw Valley St.

Huebner, a senior from Saginaw, took first place in two events for the Cardinals at the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies Invite, including the 400-meter hurdles. She crossed the line in a time of 59.63 seconds, hitting the NCAA DII Provisional qualifying time. She also won the women’s javelin throw with a best of 31.84m.


WOMEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Cheyenne Williamson, Saginaw Valley St. 

Williamson, traveled to Duke University in Durham, N.C., to compete in Tobacco Road Challenge women’s heptathlon. She finished in third place for the Cardinals at the event filled with top talent form NCAA DI. The Essexville, Mich., native scored 5,517 total points in the event, hitting the NCAA DII Automatic Qualifying mark. Williamson won the heptathlon long jump with a best of 6.11m and crossed the line first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.35 seconds.


MEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK -  Trevor Bassitt, Ashland 

Bassitt is the GLIAC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week for the second time outdoors this season, and the 15th time in his Eagle career. At the Lee (Tenn.) Flames Invitational on Friday and Saturday (April 9-10), Bassitt set yet another school record, his fourth of the outdoor campaign, in the men’s 200-meter dash, finishing in 20.52 seconds. He also won the men’s 110 hurdles (13.61 seconds) and 400 hurdles (50.18 seconds). So far this spring, Bassitt ranks first in NCAA Division II in the 200 dash, 110 hurdles, 400 hurdles and as part of the 4x100 relay, having automatically qualified for the 2021 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships (May 27-29 at Grand Valley State) in all four events.


MEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Alex Hill, Ashland 

Hill is the GLIAC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week for the second time this spring, and the 10th time as an Eagle. On Friday at the Walsh Invitational, Hill won both the men’s hammer throw (67.78 meters/222-feet-4) and discus throw (51.65 meters/169-feet-5), with the hammer distance being a new personal record. Hill is the No. 2-ranked men’s hammer thrower in the country, and has automatically qualified for nationals, and is the No. 6-ranked men’s discus thrower in the nation.
