GLIAC Announces Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its sixth weekly awards of the 2020-21 outdoor track and field season. Ashland  secured both weekly awards on the men's side, with senior Trevor Bassitt earning track athlete of the week and classmate Alex Hill securing field athlete of the week. On the Women's side, Saginaw Valley St. sophomore Cheyenne Williamson was selected Women's Track Athlete of the Week, while Ferris State junior Brianna Copley was awarded Field athlete of the Week.   


WOMEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK -  Cheyenne Williamson, Saginaw Valley St.

Williamson had another strong showing at the Elaine Leigh Invite hosted by Oakland University on Saturday. The Essexville, Mich., native won four events, hitting the NCAA DII Provisional mark in all four. Williamson won the 11-meter hurdles in 14.14 seconds and took the high jump with a best height of 1.70m. She was also a member of both the 4X100 and 4X400 relay teams that took first place for the Cardinals.


WOMEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Brianna Copley, Ferris State

Ferris State University junior thrower Brianna Copley emerged victorious in winning the shot put and set a school record with a performance of 48-9.50 (14.87m) at the Davenport Invitational on Saturday (April 24) in Caledonia. Copley also won the discus at the meet with a throw of 153-5. Her performance helped lead the Bulldogs to a big weekend which saw the FSU men’s and women’s teams combined for six first-place finishes and 55 top-10 event performances in two different weekend events.


MEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK -  Trevor Bassitt, Ashland 

On Saturday (April 24), Bassitt won three events – the men’s 110-meter hurdles (13.84 seconds) and men’s 400 hurdles (49.82), and as the anchor leg on the men’s 4x100 relay team (40.26 seconds). He continues to pace NCAA Division II in the men’s 200 dash, 400 dash, 110 hurdles, 400 hurdles, and as part of the men’s 4x100 and 4x400 relays.


MEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Alex Hill, Ashland

Hill on Friday (April 23) turned in his PR in the men’s hammer throw in winning the elite classification, turning in a top heave of 69.96 meters/229-feet-6. That mark is good for No. 2 in the nation, and Hill also is the No. 8 men’s discus thrower in the country.
