Lakers beat Lewis, will play No. 1 Drury for regional title

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – No. 3 seed Grand Valley State defeated No. 2 seed Lewis 72-55 Saturday during the semifinal round of the 2019 NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Midwest Regional and will play No. 1 seed Drury in the championship game Monday.

Drury (33-0), ranked No. 1 nationally, eliminated Northern Michigan, 78-56.

GVSU and Drury play in the championship game at 7 p.m. CT Monday at the O'Reilly Family Events Center on Drury's campus.

Maddie Dailey scored 20 points, Jenn DeBoer 13, Taya Andrews 12, Cassidy Boensch 11 and Natalie Koenig 10 as the Lakers (29-3) controlled the game from start to finish.

The Laker defense held Lewis (27-5) to just 34.8 percent from the field and 21.2 percent from beyond the arc, while forcing the Flyers into 15 turnovers. Just two Flyers found double digits, as Tierney Lockett led the way with 12 while Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Player of the Year Jessica Kelliher added 10.

Drury, which jumped to a 21-7 first-quarter lead and cruised to the win, scored 50 points on 31 NMU turnovers. Hailey Diestelkamp scored 16 points to lead four double-figure scorers.

Taylor Hodell came off the bench to score 14 points and Darby Youngstrom had 12 for NMU (23-10).
