Ashland and Northern Michigan advance to GLIAC Women's Basketball Tournament championship game

ALLENDALE - No. 2 seed Ashland defeated No. 3 seed Michigan Tech, 77-61, during Saturday's second semifinal game of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament in Allendale, Mich., and will play No. 4 seed Northern Michigan for the GLIAC Tournament title at 3 p.m.  Sunday at Grand Valley State University. NMU upset top seed Grand Valley State, 47-38, in Saturday's opener.

Jodi Johnson scored 22 points to lead Ashland (27-2), which landed four players in double figures. Cassidy Trotter scored 21 points for Michigan Tech (21-9).

The defensive-minded Wildcats (22-8) held Grand Valley State to less than 40 points for the second time this season. GVSU was also limited to a season-low 32 percent field-goal shooting. NMU has held opponents to a league-best 50.6 points per game. Jessica Schultz scored 17 points to lead NMU. Cassidy Boensch scored 18 points for the Lakers (27-3), who, along with the Huskies, await Sunday's NCAA Tournament bids.

During the regular season, Ashland defeated Northern Michigan, 71-55.

Sunday's showdown will pit the league's top offense, Ashland (89.4 ppg), against the top defense, Northern Michigan.
