GVSU's DeLong and DU's Samdal earn golfer of the week awards

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly men's and women's golf awards. Davenport junior Natalie Samdal claimed top honors in women's action, while Grand Valley State's Charles DeLong was the men's athlete of the week.


MEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK: Charles DeLong - Grand Valley State

Redshirt freshman Charles DeLong (DeWitt, Mich.) finished third at -5 (211) following the third round of the Doc Spragg Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 21 in Findlay, Ohio. DeLong was 10th after day one. Two eagles in the final-round eagles aided his surge to the top five. DeLong hit his first eagle on a par 5 553-yard hole, and his second on the same hole he hit an eagle on the day before, a par 5 496-yard hole. DeLong was named to the all-tournament team after leading GVSU to a fifth-place team finish.
 

WOMEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK: Natalie Samdal - Davenport

Junior Natalie Samdal (Caledonia, Mich.) had the highlight of her career thus far by winning medalist honors to lead Davenport to a second-place team finish at the 10-team Champions of Women's Golf Tournament held Saturday and Sunday at Ohio Dominican. She tied the school record with a 71 on Saturday and backed that up with a 73 on Sunday to win by four strokes over Alexis Savage of Tiffin.
