WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit women's lacrosse team couldn't make it a grand opening celebration, christening the new Bishop Schmitt Field at the James LaRossa Stadium with a 19-4 loss to Edinboro University.
 
The loss was the first game ever held on the new, state of the art, turf field, and drops the Cardinals to 2-2 on the early season.
 
"It was fantastic playing on the new field, but we just couldn't sustain possession tonight," said WJU head coach Tim Florence. "We weren't able to clear the ball with regularity, and we weren't' throwing and catching as well as we have. We just played way too much defense."
 
The Fighting Scots jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead in the first half, fueled by a hat-trick from Cydney Hrycko.
 
The Cardinals finally got on the board when Danielle Kirby received an assist from Paige Plesich and found the back of the net to make the score 9-1 with seven minutes left to play in the half.
 
Edinboro rattled of eight more goals in the last six minutes of the first half, and first 13 minutes of the second.
 
The Cardinals then went on a streak, putting in three goals in the span of three minutes.
 
The first WJU goal of the half was scored by Mary Burns, assisted by Jessie Tufnell. Sara Fitzsimon then found the net on an assist from Shelby McClure with 10 minutes to play. Just minutes later, the Cardinals got on the board again with Olivia Krock scoring on an assist from Elizabeth Hales.
 
Before the day was out however, Edinboro punched in two more goals to bring the final score to 19-4 in favor of the Fighting Scots.
 
The Cardinals return to Bishop Schmitt Field on Friday, March 14^th when they host to another PSAC powerhouse, Shippensburg.
