NMU's Bittell and Smukala receive women's lacrosse weekly awards

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced the fifth GLIAC Lacrosse Athlete of the Week awards for the 2022 season. Northern Michigan swept the awards, as sophomore midfielder Minnie Bittell was selected as Offensive Player of the Week and sophomore goalkeeper Aliyah Smukala earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.


OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Minnie Bittell, Northern Michigan

The Wildcats were led by Minnie Bittell (Minnetonka, Minn.) on offense as she scored five goals against the Golden Bears and added three goals and an assist vs. the Peacocks. Bittell now leads the ‘Cats with 33 goals, 10 assists, and 43 points this season. The sophomore midfielder continues to improve off of her record-setting All-GLIAC First Team season in 2021. 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Aliyah Smukala, Northern Michigan 

Aliyah Smukala (Walled, Lake, Mich.) controlled the games between the pipes for the Green and Gold. The sophomore goalkeeper stopped 18 shots on the weekend with a .529 save percentage. Her 11 stops in goal and six ground balls picked up at Concordia were both season bests.
