2023 All-GLIAC Women's Lacrosse teams announced

GLIAC — The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) announced its 2023 All-GLIAC Women's Lacrosse teams following a vote by the league's head coaches.  

Regular season conference champion Grand Valley State won two major awards, with Maddy Champagne earning GLIAC Attacker of the Year honors and Molly Bursinger receiving Midfielder of the Year recognition for the second consecutive season. 

Conference runner-up Northern Michigan received three honors -- GLIAC Defender of the Year (Lauryn Rygiel), GLIAC Freshman of the Year (Hannah Melander) and GLIAC Coach of the Year (Lindsey Majkrzak). 

The GLIAC Goalkeeper of the Year is Concordia-St. Paul's Candace McDole. 


2023 GLIAC ATTACKER OF THE YEAR
Maddy Champagne, Grand Valley State
Maddy Champagne was named GLIAC Attacker of the Year after leading the league with 49 goals and tying for the lead with 64 points. She was also tied the conference lead with 91 draw controls, tying a GVSU single-game record with 13 in the home win over Davenport. On 10 different occasions, Champagne scored three or more goals, scoring a season-high six at Davenport. She was the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week four times, including a stretch of three consecutive weeks during conference play. In the win over Notre Dame College, Champagne became the 11th player in program history to score 100 career goals.

2023 GLIAC MIDFIELDER OF THE YEAR
Molly Bursinger, Grand Valley State
For the third consecutive season, senior midfield Molly Bursinger has been named GLIAC Midfielder of the Year. Bursinger was second in the GLIAC with 48 goals this season, and her 64 points were tied for tops in the league. Bursinger was a key part of one of the best draw control units in the nation, grabbing 91, as the Lakers rank second nationally in draw controls per game. She has scored three or more goals in 11 different games this season, tallying five goals three times, and scored her 100th career goal earlier this season in the win over Colorado Mesa. Twice this season, Bursinger has been named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week and earned one GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week.

 


2023 GLIAC DEFENDER OF THE YEAR
Lauryn Rygiel, Northern Michigan
Senior defender Lauryn Rygiel started in all 16 games for the Wildcats and played a critical part in the NMU defense core. Across conference matchups in the regular season, Lauryn led the GLIAC in caused turnovers with 10, her 10 ground balls are second among field players and sixth overall, and her 12 draw controls are seventh. Across all competitions, her 51 draw controls are good for fifth, and her 13 caused turnovers are sixth.

2023 GLIAC GOALKEEPER OF THE YEAR
Candace McDole, Concordia-St. Paul
The league-leader in ground balls (3.07/game), Candace McDole also ranks second in the league with 9.50 saves per game and a .457 save percentage. In two years at Concordia-St. Paul, McDole has been a two-time All-GLIAC performer, earning Second Team honors in 2022 before earning First Team honors and being named the GLIAC Goalie of the Year in 2023. She holds the Concordia career records with 8.76 saves per game and .443 save percentage, playing in 29 games and saving 254 shots. She's produced consistently between the pipes, registering at least 10 saves in all six GLIAC contests and 10 times overall on the year with her top game being the program's first-ever double-double with 19 saves and 10 ground balls against Grand Valley State, which were both the second-highest single-game totals in program history.

2023 GLIAC FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
Hannah Melander, Northern Michigan
Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Melander started all 16 games for the Wildcats, posting overall stats of 11.82 GAA and a .430 SV% with 130 saves. Across GLIAC goalkeepers, Hannah was one of two goalies to start 16 games for their respective clubs during the regular season across all matchups. In that span, her seven wins was a GLIAC best and her 58.3% win percentage was second, she was second in total minutes played with 873:06, and her 11.82 GAA was second overall (first among goalies who played in 14 or more games). Her 130 saves were good for third, as well as her .430 SV% ranking third overall.

2023 GLIAC COACH OF THE YEAR
Lindsey Majkrzak, Northern Michigan
In the 2023 regular season, the ‘Cats went 10-6, breaking the record for most wins in program history that Lindsey and her club set the year prior (9 wins), along with setting single-season records for total assists (74) and fewest turnovers at 205 (minimum 14 games played, 2020 season cut short due to COVID-19). Under her leadership in 2023, athletes earned GLIAC Defender of the Year and Freshman of the Year, three athletes earned First Team All-GLIAC honors with three more earning Second Team All-GLIAC honors, as well as two honorable mentions.
