GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced the eighth GLIAC Lacrosse Player of the Week awards for the 2023 season. Grand Valley State junior attacker Maddy Champagne earned offensive player of the week recognition while Northern Michigan freshman goalkeeper Hannah Melander was named defensive player of the week.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Maddy Champagne, Grand Valley State
After posting a 10-point week, in which she scored the 100th goal of her career, junior attacker Maddy Champagne was named the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week. This is the second time this season that Champagne has earned the honor, and the fifth time in her career. In the first game of the week on Friday afternoon, Champagne scored five goals and added one assist in the 16-8 victory over Northern Michigan. She also controlled a season-high eight draws and grabbed one groundball. On Sunday at Notre Dame College, she scored four more times, with the final goal representing the 100th goal of her career, becoming just the 11th player in program history to reach that milestone. In the 19-2 win over the Falcons, Champagne also had eight draw controls. On the season, Champagne leads the team with 29 goals and 40 points and is second with 57 draw controls.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Hannah Melander, Northern Michigan
Northern Michigan freshman goalkeeper Hannah Melander stopped 21 shots in two road GLIAC games, including a 15-5 victory over Davenport. She had eight saves on 13 shots for a .615 save percentage against the Panthers and held a .500 save percentage over the weekend. The Forest Lake, Minnesota native now leads the GLIAC with 102 total saves and a 12.09 goals against average.
