Notre Dame's Joey Davis Named GLIAC Wrestling "Athlete of the Week"

BAY CITY, Mich. - Notre Dame College freshman Joey Davis (Compton, Calif.) was named Great Lake Intercollegiate Athletic Conference  Wrestling "Athlete of the Week" for his efforts last weekend.

GLIAC Wrestling Athlete of the Week:

Joey Davis - Notre Dame College
Freshman  - Compton, Calif.

The award, for events the week of Jan. 21, comes as another notch on the belt of the freshman sensation who extended his season record to 20-0 on Sunday with a victory over second-ranked (National Wrestling Coaches Association) Matt Vandermeer in a 33-6 victory over Lake Erie.  Davis – himself ranked No. 1 at 165 pounds in both the current NWCA and Basford polls – downed Vandermeer, 5-2.

It’s been a big January for the former two-time California state champion:  Davis went 4-0, with a pin and two majors, in Notre Dame’s march through the NWCA D-II National Duals on Jan. 12-13 and was named the NCAA-II Outstanding Wrestler of the meet.  The Falcons went on to place second at the National Duals and were subsequently bumped up in the division’s two major national polls – NWCA and Basford – to No. 2, despite the fact that NDC is competing as a D-II program for the first time this season.

In the first half of the season, Joey Davis nailed down titles at three different open tournaments, wrestling a slew of D-I foes in the process.

Sunday’s NDC-LEC dual matched up 19-0 Davis against 24-5 Vandermeer in a one-vs.-two battle.   Davis led the bout al the way, and he compiled his five points with two takedowns and an escape.  The win extended Davis’ unbeaten streak and also continue another – he has not been taken down in any bout this season.
