Players of the Year Release
Kansas City, Mo. -- In a national press release
from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) on
Thursday (Dec. 18) afternoon, Grand Valley State sophomore
midfielder Marti
Corby was named the NCAA Division II Player of the Year.
Corby, who became just the fifth two-time NSCAA All-American in
program history with her first-team selection earlier this month,
helped the Lakers capture their fourth national championship and
was among the nation's leaders in points and assists this
season.
Corby joins Irie Dennis and Jenna Wenglinski as the only other
players in school history to win the prestigious award. Dennis
claimed the award in 2009 and Wenglinski took home the honor in
2010.
The two-time Daktronics All-America First Team honoree ranked
eighth nationally with 13 assists--tied for the fifth-most helpers
by any Laker in a single season--while her 37 points were tied for
18th among Division II players. A 2014 Capital One All-America
Second Team selection, Corby's 12 goals, which included a pair of
game-winning tallies, ranked second on the team.
For the second year in a row, Corby played some of her best soccer
in postseason matches.
Chosen to the All-NCAA Tournament Team, the Ada, Michigan native
recorded the game-winning assist in the NCAA Midwest Regional
Championship at No. 3 Wisconsin-Parkside, game-tying goal in the
NCAA Semifinals versus No. 6 Saint Rose and handed out an assist in
the NCAA Championship victory over No. 8 Rollins. Corby also
tallied four points via one goal and two assists in three GLIAC
Tournament matches.
Her best individual performances, based solely on statistics, came
in two of GVSU's three clashes with GLIAC rival Ferris State. In a
3-2 road victory, Corby scored a career-high three goals, totaling
a career-high six points and becoming the 22nd Laker player since
2003 to post a hat trick. Less than one month later, the two-time
All-GLIAC First Team honoree dished out three assists, matching her
previous career high and becoming only the fourth GVSU player since
2003 with multiple three-assist matches.
Through two seasons in a Laker uniform, Corby's 1.33 points per
game ranks sixth in the school's career record book. Additionally,
Corby ranks 13th in career points (68), tied for 13th in career
goals (24) and 14th in career assists (20)
