GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards after the first weekend of competition to begin the 2019women's soccer season. Grand Valley State junior forward Ava Cook earned GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week accolades, while Ferris State senior goalkeeper Allison Chesterfield claimed GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Ava Cook - Grand Valley State
Junior Ava Cook scored three goals in the opening weekend to help No. 1 Grand Valley State start the 2019 season 2-0 in a weekend against two teams from the 2018 NCAA Tournament. Cook scored twice in the season-opener, including what would be the game-winning goal, to lead the Lakers to a 5-2 win over Rollins College. She then scored five minutes into the second half against No. 6 Lee in a rematch of the 2018 NCAA Semifinal to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead in an eventual 3-0 final. She had seven shots overall for the weekend, including six on frame for a 0.857 shot-on-goal percentage.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Alison Chesterfield - Ferris State
Ferris State senior goalkeeper Alison Chesterfield did not allow a goal on the weekend in 200 minutes of work as the Bulldogs went unbeaten in regional action. She earned a win on Sunday with a single save in FSU's 1-0 triumph over Quincy, which followed a double-overtime scoreless deadlock against GLVC favorite Truman State in season-opening competition on Friday at the Bulldog Soccer Field. For the weekend, she totaled five saves with a 0.00 goals against average and 1.000 save figure on the two shutouts.
