GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following the fifth weekend of the 2021 spring Women's Soccer season. Northern Michigan junior Caroline Halonen was named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week, while Ashland senior Goalkeeper Hannah Lee was awarded Defensive Player of the Week.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Caroline Halonen- Northern Michigan
In the 6-0 win over Purdue Northwest on Friday, Halonen scored two goals for the Wildcats. The midfielder from Hartland, Mich. also notched a goal and an assist in NMU’s 3-2 win over the Rangers of Parkside on Sunday. Halonen is currently seventh in program history in career points (52), seventh in career shots (174), tied for eighth in game-winning goals with four, and ninth in career goals (20), fifth in career assists (12).
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hannah Lee- Ashland
It is the sixth time Lee has claimed a GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week award in her career and her second this season. She also won it on April 6. Lee helped the Eagles go 1-0-1 last week, surrendering just one goal in two games, including a 2-1 win over reigning national champion and No. 2-ranked Grand Valley State. She made six saves in that game – all in the second half – as the Eagles scored twice after halftime to secure their first win over Grand Valley since 2005. The win also snapped GVSU’s 55-game unbeaten streak at home. Lee followed it up with a 110-minute clean sheet in a scoreless draw at Davenport on Sunday in which she made three saves. She now ranks third in the GLIAC in goals against average (0.64), second in save percentage (.872) and fifth in total saves (34).
