UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State University is excited to announce Tyler Channell as Head Coach of the SVSU women's soccer program.
"We are happy to welcome Tyler Channell as our new Women's Soccer Head Coach," SVSU Director of Athletics John Decker said. "Tyler's commitment to SVSU Athletics, from his days as an All-American player here to his vital contribution to the recent success of our Women's Soccer program, has been clearly demonstrated. In addition, his significant ties to our recruiting base will allow him to continue to bring outstanding talent to SVSU, and his vision for taking our program to even greater heights in our conference and nationally also will provide exciting athletics experiences and successful futures for our student-athletes."
Channell, who was recently elected into the Cardinal Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2022 due to his outstanding playing career, has been an assistant with the program since 2016 and helped lead SVSU to its best-ever finish in 2021, as the Cardinals marched to the NCAA DII Sweet Sixteen finishing 14-6-3. Following the departure of Michael O'Neill in March, Channell took on the role of Interim Head Coach for the Cardinals.
"I would like to thank the administration for trusting me to lead the SVSU women's soccer program," Channell said. "Also, I would like to thank the previous coach, Michael O'Neill, for being the best possible mentor, and friend over the years. In the past six years as an assistant, I have seen this program grow, and competing for GLIAC championships is the standard. I am beyond excited to be able to lead a special group of players and continue the success that the SVSU women's soccer program has had in recent years."
In addition to his role as an assistant coach with the SVSU women's team, Channell has served as a staff coach and director of coaching for the Nationals SC, helping guide over 30 players to college soccer programs in the last two seasons alone. Channell also served as head coach of the Motor City FC last summer.
During his playing career, Channell was named the Midwest Regional Player of the Year twice and an All-American in 2015. Channell is the program's all-time career leader in points, assists, game-winning goals, and is second in career goals.
Channell graduated from SVSU in 2015 with a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice. He becomes the fourth head coach in program history for SVSU women's soccer.
