JENISON, Mich. – The Grand Valley State men and Wayne State women swimming and diving squads captured 2015 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Swimming & Diving Championship titles after impressive performances on Saturday (Feb. 14), hosted by Grand Valley State and Hillsdale College at the Jenison Aquatics Center in Jenison, Mich. The Lakers took home its fourth men's title and first since 2010, while the Warriors claimed their sixth-consecutive league championship including nine in the last ten years dating back to 2006.
2015 GLIAC Men's Swimmer of the Year Till Barthel amassed two more victories on Saturday to run his meet total to six, including the 100 free (44.47) and 400 free relay (pool record 2:59.03) on the final day. Bob Stephenson-Ganner from Wayne State helped guide the Warrior men to a runner-up finish in the team standings with a top finish in the 1650 freestyle (15:49.68). Wayne State's Piotr Jachowicz added a first-place finish in the 200 breaststroke (1:59.68) to bring his total to five for the meet.
Metin Aydin of the champion GVSU men's squad took home top honors in the 200 backstroke after completing the race in 1:46.54. The Lakers amassed a GLIAC meet record total of 1,098 points throughout the four days. Wayne State finished second with a total of 870.50.
Wayne State's Elizabeth Rawlings produced a flawless
showing in the 3 Meter Diving competition en route to a winning
score of 497.75 and eventual women's team title. The Warriors
accumulated 820.50 points to outperform GVSU in second with a 689
total. Wayne State head coach Sean Peters was selected
GLIAC Women's Coach of the Year for the eighth time in his
career. He has won either the women's and or men's conference
coach of the Year award for 14 consecutive years starting in
2002.
Ashland's Hannah Mattar was named 2015 GLIAC Women's Swimmer of the Year after picking up her third event crown of the championships in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.20) on the final day. Mattar won both the 200 and 400 IM races on Thursday and Friday.
Grand Valley State's women started the fourth and final day with a victory in the 1650 freestyle from Sam Postmus after a pool record time of 17:00.60. Northern Michigan's Deborah Lawrence earned her third event crown of the meet in the 100 free with a pool record time of 50.19 before picking up another title later in the day when her Wildcat 400 meter relay team finished in 3:29.11.
Lake Erie's Meri Cizmar made school history on Saturday when she became the first female to claim a GLIAC championship after she bested the field in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:00.62.
