BAY CITY, Mich. - Northwood University senior Darina Berkova (Ceske Budejovic, Czech Republic) was named the 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) women's tennis "Athlete of the Year" by the league's head coaches in all-conference balloting.  The coaches named Tiffin University's Caroline Nelhage (Lindome, Sweden) the league's "Freshman of the Year," while Phil Conley, head coach of the Tiffin University team, earned GLIAC "Coach of the Year" honors.

Berkova, a senior from Ceske Budejovic, Czech Republic, led Northwood to its third straight GLIAC Championship, finishing the fall season with a 23-5 overall record at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles.  She posted a 13-0 record at the top singles position, winning all of her matches in straight sets.  For her career, Berkova has a record of 73-7 overall in singles and 133-24 overall. Berkova finishes her career as a four-time First Team All-GLIAC honoree and a two-time GLIAC Player of the Year (2009, 2013).

Nelhage, a freshman from Lindome, Sweden, had a sensational debut for the Dragons this fall, posting an unbeaten record in both singles and doubles. Nelhage went 18-0 in singles, including a 14-0 mark in conference play, while also registering a 20-0 record in doubles play with teammate Chelsea Beck. She is the first Dragons player to post an unbeaten season in women's tennis and helped lead the Dragons to the most season wins in their history with 16.

Conley, in his fifth year as Head Coach of the Dragons, enjoyed a record-setting season. He helped guide the Dragons to the most season wins in school history as the team finished the fall with a 16-4 record and a third place regular season finish in the GLIAC with a 12-2 mark. The third place finish is the best finish ever for Tiffin in the GLIAC, while their 12 GLIAC victories are twice as many as they had one year ago.
