DETROIT –The Warriors claimed the GLIAC regular season champion title with a 12-0 league record after having an undefeated fall regular season slate. This is the first GLIAC regular-season title for Wayne State since 1982 and first unbeaten conference record since the 1982-83 Tartar squad went 7-0 in league play.
The Wayne State University women's tennis team (12-0
overall and GLIAC) won its final regular season match 8-1 against
Saginaw Valley State (4-8 overall and GLIAC) Sunday afternoon at
the Multipurpose Indoor Facility on the WSU campus.
Wayne State took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, then swept
the single flights.
The WSU senior pair of Anne Li
Briand (Repentigny, Que. / Ecole Secondaire
Felix-Leclerc) and Yahsha
Moore (West Bloomfield) won at the top flight
8-1, while junior Julia
Kamenko (Thornhill, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) and
freshman Liz de Souza
Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil / Unificado) were
also victorious, winning at the third flight 8-6.
At the top singles flight, Moore earned a 6-2, 6-2 win and
sophomore Andreea
Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren
Cousino) won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Junior Alex
Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) posted a
6-4, 6-4 win at the third flight.
Briand posted a 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) victory at No. 4 singles,
Kamenko fought her way through three sets to a 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 win at
No. 5 singles and Lauren
Hughes (Detroit, Mich. / Southfield) won 7-5,
6-4 at the sixth flight.
Wayne State will now prepare for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament beginning this Friday thru Sunday (Oct. 24-26) at the Midland Community Tennis Center in Midland, Mich.
