GVSU's Leko Crowned GLIAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its sixth women's tennis weekly awards for the 2018 season. Grand Valley State freshman Marija Leko claimed GLIAC Player of the Week honors after GVSU defeated Northwood to clinch a share of the GLIAC Regular Season Championship and the No. 1 overall seed in this week's 2018 GLIAC Women's Tennis Tournament.


PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Marija Leko - Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State freshman Marija Leko had an excellent weekend after she went a combined 4-0 and helped her team claim a share of the GLIAC Regular Season title and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming 2018 GLIAC Women’s Tennis Tournament with wins over Saginaw Valley State and Northwood.

In singles, Leko posted a 2-0 record as she played from the No. 3 singles position against SVSU and Northwood. Against the Cardinals, the freshman won in two sets by a score of 7-5, 6-0, before a three-set victory against Northwood by a score of 6-7, 6-3, 10-8. 

In doubles, Leko was paired with Livia Christman and the duo put on a dominant performance as they claimed two important victories that secured the doubles point for the Lakers fromNo. 3 doubles. During the match against Saginaw Valley State, Leko and Christman won 6-2, before they claimed a 6-1 win over Northwood.

On the year, Leko holds a 7-4 overall record in singles that includes a 5-3 mark against GLIAC opponents. In doubles, she is 5-2 overall on the season in with a 4-1 record against GLIAC competition.
