FSU's Waller, Daavettila, Doren Receive Women's Tennis top Honors; All-GLIAC Teams Announced

 

GLIAC - The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its 2021 All-GLIAC Women's Tennis Team following the final day of the Conference Tournament held at the Midland Tennis Center. The Ferris State Bulldogs swept the top tennis honors with Morgan Waller earning GLIAC player of the Year, and freshman teammate Sophie Daavettila earning Freshman of the Year. Both Athletes were led by Head Coach Mark Doren who received his first GLIAC Women's Coach of the Year honor.  

PLAYER OF THE YEAR - Morgan Waller - Ferris State

Ferris State University sophomore Morgan Waller has led the Bulldog women's tennis squad to both the program's first GLIAC Regular-Season and Tournament Championships in 19 years this spring. Waller owns a combined 25-5 overall singles and doubles record on the year, including a 14-1 mark in GLIAC regular-season play. As the squad's top singles player, she posted a 6-1 mark in conference matches and went a perfect 8-0 in doubles play at the number two flight. Overall, she's registered a perfect 15-0 doubles performance on the year in the program's historic march to the league championships. FSU was most recently ranked 19th in the country, has won 16 consecutive matches and will make the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2015 this year.
 

FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR: Sophie Daavettila - Ferris State

Ferris State University freshman Sophie Daavettila has played a key role in a historic season for the Bulldog women's tennis squad, helping FSU to a 16-1 overall record and both the league's regular season and tournament championships for the first time since 2002. Daavettila currently has a combined 26-7 singles and doubles record on the year and finished GLIAC regular-season play a combined 12-4 overall. She posted an 11-5 singles mark with the bulk of her action at the second flight and owns a 16-2 doubles record at the third flight this year. Daavettila won a dramatic three-set match to lift FSU past rival Grand Valley State in Sunday's league tournament championship match, rallying back after dropping the opening set to give the Bulldogs the win. Overall, she's helped FSU vault to #19 in the nation and the school's first NCAA Tourney appearance in six years.


COACH OF THE YEAR: Mark Doren - Ferris State

Ferris State University men's and women's tennis head coach Mark Doren has keyed the Bulldogs' historic tennis march this year, leading both program's to the GLIAC Regular Season and Tournament Championships, marking the first time since 1999 in which FSU has went a perfect four-for-four in garnering all the league titles. Under his watch, the Bulldog women's team has posted a 16-1 record and claimed their first GLIAC titles since 2002 this spring, winning their final 16 matches in a row to date. On the men's side, the Bulldogs remain unbeaten at 16-0 on the year and the squad won their fifth regular-season title in the last six tries along with their fourth tournament championship in the previous five. This year, the Bulldogs are a combined 32-1 in men's and women's tennis action and both squads finished unblemished in the GLIAC. The men will make their 23rd all-time NCAA Tournament appearance while the women's berth is the school's first since 2015.
