WSU's Spicer and Ruyssen named GLIAC Tennis Players of the Week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its 11th weekly tennis awards for the 2022 campaign. Wayne State junior Dom Spicer was honored as men's player of the week, while Wayne State sophomore Anais Ruyssen was recognized as women's player of the week.


MEN'S PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Dom Spicer, Wayne State

Junior Dom Spicer (London, England) collected his third GLIAC Player of the Week honor of the season after helping the Warriors post a pair of ranked wins against No. 31-Grand Valley State (4/15) and No. 20-Ferris State (4/16) this past weekend. Spicer earned a 3-1 record between singles and doubles. Against GVSU's Josep Canyadell, he battled back to win a three-set match, 3-6, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 1 singles. Spicer is the No. 33-ranked player in the nation. He followed with another strong showing against the Bulldogs. Playing in the top spot of singles, Spicer made quick work of his opponent, recording a 6-0, 6-2 victory. He also paired with Luke Laws to win at No. 2 doubles. The duo claimed a 6-3 victory. Spicer has compiled a 21-8 record in singles play, including a 5-1 mark in the GLIAC at the top spot.  He has a 20-7 doubles record, primarily playing at the second flight.
 

WOMEN'S PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Anais Ruyssen, Wayne State

Sophomore Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) has earned her first GLIAC Player of the Week accolade, as she helped guide the Green and Gold to a pair of victories over No. 37-Grand Valley State (4/15) and No. 64-Ferris State (4/16) this past weekend. Ruyssen was dominant over the weekend, as she didn't drop a set en route to a 4-0 record between singles and doubles. She had no trouble against GVSU, posting a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the top singles spot. She then paired with Marta Komar at No. 1 doubles and recorded a 6-2 victory. The following day against the Bulldogs, Ruyssen was just as good, defeating her opponent, 6-0, 7-5, at No. 1 singles.  Her and Komar teamed at No. 1 doubles, and the duo earned a 6-1 win. Ruyssen is 15-4 in singles this year, including a 7-0 mark at the top flight.  In doubles action, she has compiled a 17-3 record, and is unbeaten at 7-0 in GLIAC play.
