GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its third weekly tennis awards for the 2022 campaign Davenport freshman Quintan van Wijk was tabbed men's player of the week, while Ferris State sophomore Sophie Daavettila was honored as women's player of the week.
MEN'S PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Quintan van Wijk, Davenport
Quintan van Wijk (Willemsted, Curacao) went 4-0 this past week in singles and doubles for the Panthers as they improved to 7-0 this season. Since joining the team for the new semester, van Wijk has posted a record of 4-1 in singles and 5-0 in doubles. He picked up straight set wins this week in singles against Hillsdale and Walsh.
WOMEN'S PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sophie Daavettila, Ferris State
Ferris State University sophomore Sophia Daavettila (Williamston, Mich.) led the Bulldogs to a pair of regional home wins over the weekend, posting a 3-1 mark, including a 2-0 performance at the number one singles flight. She earned a straight-set triumph to help fuel a comeback victory in a 4-3 win over Walsh on Friday while narrowly falling 7-5 in doubles action. On Sunday, Daavettila was a decisive winner at the number one flight in singles play and also teamed up with Sam Stephenson to register a 6-4 win at the top doubles position in FSU's 5-2 victory over Hillsdale. The two wins lifted the Bulldogs' home record to a perfect 3-0 this year.
