GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its eighth tennis weekly awards for the 2023 campaign. Wayne State sophomore Cedric Drenth was selected GLIAC Men's Player of the Week while Grand Valley State junior Vasileia Griva was honored as women's player of the week.
MEN'S PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Cedric Drenth, Wayne State
Wayne State University sophomore Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) kicked off conference action with a spotless performance at Ferris State and Grand Valley State last weekend. As the 34th-ranked singles player in the nation, Drenth defeated Erik Kovacs on Friday (March 24th) in straight sets (6-2, 7-5), before handling the 61st-ranked singles player, Unai Gonzalez, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 on Saturday (March 25th) to help the Warriors to their first GLIAC victory of the spring over the Lakers. The Warrior teamed up with Daniel Grey in doubles (the third-ranked pairing in Division II) to claim a pair of 6-3 victories at the first flight over the weekend. For the season, Drenth improved to 11-8 in singles with nine of those victories at the No. 1 singles spot.
