BAY CITY, Mich. – University of Findlay's sophomore outside hitter Hannah Tong (Carey, Ohio / Carey) was named the 2014 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) volleyball "Attacker of the Year," in voting conducted by the league's head coaches. Tong's teammate freshman middle blocker Nickyla Garverick (Crestline, Ohio / Colonel Crawford) was tabbed both "Freshman of the Year," and "Blocker of the Year," while Grand Valley State's senior setter Kaitlyn Wolters (Hudsonville, Mich. / Unity Christian) earned "Player of the Year" and "Setter of the Year" accolades. GVSU's senior libero Christina Canepa (Grand Rapids, Mich. / East Grand Rapids) was voted "Libero of the Year". Findlay's head coach Wick Colchagoff took home "Coach of the Year" honors.
Kaitlyn Wolters is the first-ever recipient of the GLIAC "Setter of the Year" award, as the starting setter on the back-to-back regular season conference champions. Earning All-GLIAC First Team honors in each of her two seasons in Allendale, Wolters ranks sixth in the GLIAC with 808 assists and seventh with 33 aces, despite GVSU playing just three sets in 17 of its 25 matches. Her 9.51 assists per set is fifth-best in the league. A tremendous offensive player, Wolters' .410 hitting percentage would lead all GLIAC players, but she is four attacks shy of the league minimum. A 2013 AVCA All-America Honorable Mention selection, Wolters ranks eighth in GVSU history with 2,059 assists in just two seasons. Wolters is just the sixth Laker to be named the GLIAC Player of the Year, following teammate Abby Aiken as the 2013 award winner. In a 3-1 win over #14 Ferris State on Sept. 23, Wolters recorded the first triple-double by a GVSU player since 2007 when she tallied 34 assists, 12 digs, and 11 kills (without an error) for a .478 percentage. With Wolters as the team's starting setter over the last two years, GVSU is 51-7.
Hannah Tong leads the GLIAC in kills with 385 and ranks second in the conference with 3.60 kills per set. She was named the GLIAC South Division Player of the Week three times during the season and earned national player of the week honors on Nov. 4. She had a season-high 31 kills against Malone on Nov. 1, the highest single match total in the GLIAC this year. The Carey, Ohio native has also added 58 blocks and has hit .246 on the year.
Nickyla Garverick leads the GLIAC with 133 blocks, which is the eighth best total in the nation. Her 1.22 blocks per set is the second highest average in the GLIAC and ranks ninth nationally. The Crestline, Ohio native is also ranked third in the GLIAC in hitting percentage at .301 and has accumulated 260 kills.
Christina Canepa becomes the second Laker to ever win the GLIAC "Libero of the Year" award, while also earning All-GLIAC First Team recognition. This year, the senior moved into second place in GVSU history with 1,615 digs - the only Laker she trails is Allyson Riley, the three-time GLIAC Libero of the Year and owner of the GLIAC record 2,488 digs. Canepa ranks sixth in the league in digs per set (4.85) and seventh in total digs (417) despite the Lakers playing just three sets in 17 of their 25 matches. The back end of a GVSU defense allowing a .109 opponent hitting percentage, Canepa has seven 20+ dig matches and has been aced just 21 times in 400 attempts.
Wick Colchagoff led the Oilers to their first GLIAC South Division title since 2003. He has now won five divisional titles during his 17-year tenure with the program. Colchagoff's 2014 team leads the GLIAC in kills (1,327), hitting percentage (.224), assists (1,239), aces (213) and blocks (260).
