Ferris State & Davenport Advance to Saturday's GLIAC Volleyball Tournament Championship

2018 GLIAC VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT CENTRAL

GLIAC -- Ferris State and Davenport will face-off in the 2018 GLIAC Volleyball Tournament Championship match on Saturday (Nov. 10) at 4 p.m. on the campus of Ferris State University in Big Rapids.

Top-seeded Ferris State hit .317 to sweep No. 4 Saginaw Valley in the first quarterfinal of the afternoon as the Bulldogs clinched a spot in the title match 25-21, 25-14, 25-14. GLIAC Player of the Year Allyson Cappel registered a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs hitting .297, while Courtney Brewer recorded 13 kills and a .333 hitting percentage in the win.

FSU's Katie O'Connell also notched a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs hitting .375 as the Bulldogs look to win their fifth-straight league tournament on Saturday. The Bulldogs put the game away in the third set with a .485 hitting performance. Saginaw Valley registered 14 blocks in the defeat and were guided by Sarah Tabit's 13 kills.

No. 6 Davenport pulled off yet another upset Friday night when the Panthers took down No. 2 Michigan Tech in a thrilling five-set affair. Tech took an early lead with a 25-20 victory in the first set before DU bounced back with a 25-21 win as the Panthers hit .256 to even up the match. Davenport used its momentum to earn a 25-16 victory to take lead, but the Huskies responded by taking a tight fourth set, 25-23. In the fifth and deciding set, Michigan Tech took an early lead but once again Davenport had the answer and pulled out the upset victory with a 15-11 decision in the fifth set.

Jessica Marvin led DU with 14 kills, while Hayley Kreiger registered 12 of her own along with Jenn Kay Vander Meer who recorded nine kills and a team-high 24 digs. The Panther offense was set up with 21 assists from Sami White and 19 assists from Sydney Tracer while Kasey Stehouwer accumulated 20 digs. Michigan Tech's Mariah Sherman tallied a match-high 20 kills in the defeat.
