GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly awards following the fourth weekend of the 2018 volleyball season. Ferris State University junior outside hitter Courtney Brewer earned GLIAC Volleyball North Division honors, while Ashland junior outside hitter Shelby Woycik captured South Division accolades.
NORTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Courtney Brewer - Ferris State
Ferris State University junior hitter Courtney Brewer led the 11th-ranked Bulldogs to a league road sweep this past week as FSU topped Northwood, Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech to stay atop the GLIAC North standings undefeated. Brewer totaled 40 kills in the three contests while hitting an impressive .321 overall to go with 10 digs and seven blocks. She had 16 kills, three digs and two blocks in Tuesday's 3-1 win at Northwood before coming back with 12 kills apiece in both FSU's 3-0 sweep at Northern Michigan on Friday and 3-1 triumph at Michigan Tech on Saturday in a first-place showdown. She hit .429 versus the Wildcats with three blocks while totaling five digs and two blocks versus MTU. The Bulldogs are now 10-3 overall and have won five-straight matches.
SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Shelby Woycik - Ashland
Ashland junior outside hitter Shelby Woycik averaged 4.27 kills per set and hit .296 last week as she helped the Eagles to a 3-0 record in GLIAC play. Woycik also averaged 3.82 digs per set and recorded a double-double in all three matches. She totaled 21 kills and 16 digs in a 3-1 win over Wayne State on Tuesday. Woycik posted 10 kills, 11 digs and five blocks in a 3-1 win over Saginaw Valley on Friday and racked up 16 kills (.500) ad 15 digs in a quick three-set sweep of Lake Superior State on Saturday. She ranks fourth in the GLIAC with 3.53 kills per set and third in total kills (180).
