GVSU's Thompson, MTU's Ghormley Claim GLIAC Volleyball Players of the Week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly awards following week six of the 2019 volleyball season. Michigan Tech Senior Olivia Ghormley earned GLIAC Volleyball North Player of the week honors, while Grand Valley St. outside hitter Ali Thompson was awarded GLIAC Volleyball South Division Player of the Week accolades. 


 NORTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Olivia Ghormley, Michigan Tech  

 Olivia Ghormley led Michigan Tech to a weekend sweep of GLIAC South Division opponents at the SDC Gym. The Huskies swept Wayne State Friday and defeated Ashland 3-1 Saturday. Ghormley averaged 5.42 kills per set on the weekend, totaling 38 while hitting .462. She had only two attack errors while also digging up 16 balls. She added two service aces and a block. Ghormley leads the GLIAC in kills per set (4.57) in conference matches. It’s the third time this season she has been named the GLIAC North Player of the Week. 


SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Ali Thompson, Grand Valley St. 

Grand Valley State sophomore outside hitter Ali Thompson totaled 38 kills (5.43 per set), 18 digs, and seven service aces while supporting an attack percentage of .301 over the weekend against #14 Ferris State and Northwood. On Friday in the match vs. Ferris State, Thompson had a career-high 22 kills with just three errors and a .404 hitting percentage against the nationally ranked Bulldogs. In the 3-0 win over Northwood on Saturday, the Cincinnati, Ohio native followed up her stellar performance with 16 kills and five service aces. Thompson is currently tied for the GLIAC lead in service aces with 23 and ranks ninth in kills with 201.
