WSU's VanderWal and Benoit and MTU's Espejo-Ramirez earn GLIAC Volleyball Players of the Week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following week one of the 2022 volleyball season. Wayne State graduate student outside hitter Lauren VanderWal earned GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week while Warrior teammate, senior defensive specialist Maddy Benoit, was named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week. Michigan Tech senior setter Lina Espejo-Ramirez captured GLIAC Setter of the Week accolades. 


OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Lauren VanderWal, Wayne State

Lauren VanderWal had at least 10 kills in all four matches during the opening weekend. She also posted a pair of double-doubles. Her best performance came against Findlay where she hit .500 and had 18 kills. For the week, VanderWal totaled 60 kills (4.29/set) and hit .280 to go with 41 digs (2.93/set) and nine total blocks.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Maddy Benoit, Wayne State

Maddy Benoit anchored the defense all weekend as WSU went 3-1 at the UIndy Invitational. She finished the season-opening weekend with 86 digs (6.14/set). In game one on Friday she surpassed 1,000 career digs. Benoit tallied 28 digs and four kills to finish the tournament in a victory over McKendree.


SETTER OF THE WEEK - Lina Espejo-Ramirez, Michigan Tech

Michigan Tech's Lina Espejo-Ramirez averaged 9.58 assists and 2.92 digs per set, leading Michigan Tech to a 4-0 record at the Otter Invitational in California. She was named to the all-tournament team. Espejo-Ramirez had a pair of double-doubles on the weekend, including a Tech career-high 33 assists while adding 11 digs in a 3-0 sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills. She tallied 115 assists, 35 digs, eight kills, six blocks, and four aces on the weekend.
