GVSU Women & Adams State Men Named Division II Scholar Teams of the Year
NEW ORLEANS – For the second consecutive season the NCAA Division II Cross Country Champion women of Grand Valley State and men of Adams State have been named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II Scholar Teams of the year for the 2013 cross country season among 136 women’s programs and 94 men’s programs that earned All-Academic Team honors.
GVSU and Adams State earned the honor as the highest-finishing team at NCAAs to have earned All-Academic Team honors by compiling a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 and scoring at an NCAA Division II regional meet. Grand Valley has earned the award in three of the past four season, while Adams State has claimed it in four of the past six seasons.

In winning their third national women’s cross country title in the past four years, the Lakers of Grand Valley State collectively earned a 3.32 cumulative GPA behind five individual All-Academic selections.
Grand Valley State claimed the title with a winning score of 54 points to runner-up Adams State’s 91 with all five of their scoring runners earning All-America honors. Three of them — Jessica Janecke, Courtney Brewis and Jordan Chester — also earned All-Academic individual honors.
The Lakers’ season also included team titles at the Midwest Regional and the GLIAC Championships.

Adams State earned a cumulative 3.27 grade point average on its way to its fifth national title in the past six seasons. The Grizzlies’ roster featured four individuals who earned All-Academic individual honors, including individual national champion and Scholar Athlete of the Year Tabor Stevens.
With 54 points, Adams State nearly halved runner-up Grand Valley State’s score of 104. The Grizzlies also notched a team victory at the RMAC Championships and finished fourth in a mostly Division I field at the Minnesota Roy Griak Invitational.
The Scholar Teams of the Year were among 136 women’s teams and 92 men’s teams that earned All-Academic Team honors for the 2013 season. Programs must have compiled a cumulative GPA or 3.00 or greater and scored at an NCAA Division II regional meet to qualify for the award.
In total 141 unique programs were recognized, including 89 programs that had both their women’s and men’s teams earn the honor.
The Newman men reported the highest team GPA at 3.80, while the King women topped their gender with a 3.78.
The PSAC led all women’s conference with 15 teams earning All-Academic honors, followed by the NSIC with 14 and the Northeast-10 with 13.
Men’s conferences were also headlined by the PSAC with nine teams earning the honor, followed by the NSIC, the GLIAC and the RMAC with eight each.
